Not just Holistic, but how to use E: All of the Above!

I made this blog because I did tons of research on success stories and research worldwide and used it on my dog with nasal cancer named Lucy. So, now my hobby is molecular biology. The treatment uses combination of health store supplements, some prescription meds, diet changes, and specific Ayurvedic and Chinese medicinal herbs. I just wanted her to have a better quality of life. I thought this combination of E: All the Above (except no radiation or chemo and surgery for this cancer was not an option) would help that for sure, but it actually put her bleeding nasal cancer in remission!
My approach to cancer is about treating the whole animals biologic system. But I do hate the word 'Holistic'. Sounds like hoo hoo. This is science based, research based data and results of using active herbal compounds that happen to be readily available and common. Some call it Nutriceuticals. Others may call it Orthomolecular cancer therapy. Or Cancer Immunotherapy.
I FEEL DIVERSITY IN TREATMENT IS KEY:
-Slow cancer cell reproduction
-Make cancer cells become easier targets for the immune system
-Kill the cancer cells
-Rid the cancer cells
-Remove the toxins it produces
- Stimulate and Modulate the immune system
-Control secondary symptoms like bleeding, infection, inflammation, mucous, appetite, or pain for a better feeling animal
-Working with your vet for exams and prescriptions that are sometimes needed when conditions are acute.
Just by using a multi-modal treatment approach that is as diverse in attack as possible. Both conventional and natural.
The body conditions that allowed it to develop in the first place must be corrected. If caught early enough, like with Lucy, this ongoing maintenance correctional treatment is all that was required at this point to achieve, so far, more than 10 TIMES the life expectancy given (more than 60 months) after diagnosis WITH remission. I did not use radiation or chemotherapy or surgery.

CURRENT STATUS - It was for more than 5 YEARS after Lucy was diagnosed by biopsy in March 2011 with nasal cancer that she lived. And she was in remission for 4 of 5 years using no radiation or chemo! Now multiply that by 7 to be 35 years extended!! She was 12.5 years old - equivalent to almost 90 human years old. She ended her watch December 1, 2016. I miss her so much.

Coconut oil has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties



Although supplements can be a confusing topic for many pet owners, most dog owners have heard of the benefits of feeding fish oils. There are however, a variety of oils that you can also use to your dog’s benefit, each with different actions and benefits.

Coconut oil consists of more than 90% saturated fats, with traces of few unsaturated fatty acids, such as monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Most of the saturated fats in coconut oil are Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs). The main component (more than 40%) of coconuts oil's MCTs is lauric acid, followed by capric acid, caprylic acid, myristic acid and palmitic. Coconut oil also contains about 2% linoleic acid (polyunsaturated fatty acids) and about 6% oleic acid (monounsaturated fatty acids).

Most of the coconut oil benefits come from these MCTs. For example, the lauric acid in coconut oil has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. Capric and caprylic acid have similar properties and are best known for their anti-fungal effects.

Besides caprylic acid, two other medium chain fatty acids found in coconut oil have been found to kill yeasts. A study done at the University of Iceland showed “capric acid, a 10-carbon saturated fatty acid, causes the fastest and most effective killing of all three strains of yeasts tested, leaving the cytoplasm disorganized and shrunken because of a disrupted or disintegrated plasma membrane. Lauric acid, a 12-carbon saturated fatty acid, was the most active at lower concentrations and after a longer incubation time.” This study shows great promise that all the medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil work together to kill yeasts, funguses, viruses, and bacteria. 


In addition, MCTs are efficiently metabolized to provide an immediate source of fuel and energy, enhancing athletic performance and aiding weight loss. In dogs, the MCTs in coconut oil balance the thyroid, helping overweight dogs lose weight and helping sedentary dogs feel energetic.

Giving coconut to your pet is an excellent health decision and can improve your pet's quality of life, but there is a right way and wrong way to start supplementing your dog or cat's diet with coconut oil.


Start slow and increase gradually.

When beginning to supplement your pet's diet with coconut oil, start slow and increase gradually. Giving too much coconut oil too soon can cause digestive and detox issues.
Because coconut oil kills bacteria, viruses, parasites, yeasts, and fungi, your pet may respond negatively to the detox aspect of taking coconut oil. Signs of detoxing too rapidly may include lethargy, headaches, flu-like symptoms, fatigue, and diarrhea.
Large amounts of coconut oil given to a dog can cause diarrhea or greasy stools while his body adjusts to the change in diet. Start with small amounts, such as ¼ teaspoon per day for small dogs or puppies and 1 teaspoon for large dogs, or even just a dab if your dog's constitution is sensitive. If your dog seems tired or uncomfortable or has diarrhea, just cut back the amount temporarily. Gradually increase the amount every few days. If your dog seems tired or uncomfortable or has diarrhea, reduce the amount temporarily. It may also be helpful to give the small amounts of coconut oil in divided doses throughout the day.
Coconut oil is best given with food. Solid or liquid coconut oil can be added to food at any meal. Solid coconut oil can easily be melted quickly in hot water.

Feeding Guidelines

A general guideline on many sites have said the optimal dose for dogs is about 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight daily or about 1 tablespoon per 30 pounds, but don't start with these amounts in the beginning!



If you cook your own pet food, coconut oil would be an excellent addition to the recipe.
Most dogs like the taste of coconut oil so you won't have trouble feeding it to them.

Coconut Oil for Pet Skin Problems

If you wish to apply topically to use coconut oil to treat a rash, wound or dry skin, but they try to lick it off, try wrapping the skin in a rag or towel for a few minutes to let the oil soak in before they get a chance to lick it off.
Different brands of coconut oil will have different tastes ranging from a bland taste, to a strong coconut taste, to a more buttery taste. You can experiment with the oil your pet finds most pleasing. I just get the Swansonvitamins.com brand. Tastes great and cheap.




I fry 2 eggs in a tablespoon of coconut oil for Lucy per day to be added to some kibble. She loves it. Oddly, she was more active and seemed in a better mood within 2 days of starting using the coconut oil to fry the eggs instead of olive oil I normally use. It really smells good with a touch of garlic. Covers up the pills odors too. I still use olive oil to fry the ground chicken or turkey chubs that I add some kibble. I might start also add half coconut oil and half olive oil for frying meat. Or go all coconut. Did I say it smells great! I got it cheap at swansonvitamins but I have seen it in stores.

Despite the unanswered question regarding whether substantial amounts of lauric acid are metabolized into monolaurin, it is important to note that lauric acid is also effective against same microorganisms. Lauric acid produces greater activity against microorganisms than caprylic acid, capric acid, or myristic acid, all of which are present in coconut oil. Given that coconut oil provides approximately 50 percent lauric acid, a substantial amount of this bactericidal and virucidal fatty acid can be obtained from consuming coconut fat in pure coconut oil, and in many foods and products.
In addition, it is important to note that lauric acid appears to have immune-boosting properties as evidenced by feeding coconut oil to laboratory animals in whom the expected immune-factor responses (inhibition of interleukin-1) to endotoxin were induced via corn-oil feeding.56-57 Ingesting this on a daily basis may be an inexpensive way to both treat and prevent infection from microorganisms.58



CLINICAL BOTTOM LINE
The antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties of lauric acid and monolaurin have been recognized for nearly three decades by only a small number of researchers: their work, however, has resulted in 100 or more research papers and numerous U.S. and foreign patents. Prof. Dr. Jon J. Kabara performed the original seminal research in this area of fat research. Kabara in1968 first patented certain fatty acids (FAs) and their derivatives (e.g., monoglycerides (MGs) that can have adverse effects on various microorganisms. While nontoxic and approved as a direct food additive by the FDA, monolaurin adversely affects bacteria, yeast, fungi, protozoa, and envelope viruses.
Kabara1-24 found that the properties that determine the anti-infective action of lipids are related to their structure: e.g., free fatty acids & monoglycerides. While the monoglycerides are active; diglycerides and triglycerides (fats) are inactive. Of the saturated fatty acids, lauric acid has greater antiviral activity than caprylic acid (C-8), capric acid (C-10), or myristic acid (C-14).
Fatty acids and monoglycerides produce their killing/inactivating effects by several mechanisms. An early postulated mechanism was the perturbing of the plasma membrane lipid bilayer. The antiviral action attributed to monolaurin is that of fluidizing the structure in the envelope of the virus, causing the disintegration of the microbial membrane. More recent studies indicate that one antimicrobial effect in bacteria is related to monolaurin's interference with signal transduction/toxin formation (Projan et al 1994)46.
Another antimicrobial effect in viruses is due to lauric acid's interference with virus assembly and viral maturation (Homung et al 1994)31. The third mode of action may be on the immune system itself (Witcher et al, 1993)35.

Antiviral Effects
Hierholzer and Kabara (1982)37 first reported the antiviral activity of the monoglyceride of lauric acid
(monolaurin) on viruses that affect humans. They showed virucidal effects of monolaurin on enveloped RNA and DNA viruses. This work was done at the Center for Disease Control of the U.S. Public Health Service. This study was carried out using selected virus prototypes or recognized representative strains of enveloped human viruses. All these viruses have a lipid membrane. The presence of a lipid membrane on viruses makes them especially vulnerable to lauric acid and its derivative monolaurin. These initial findings from the Center of Disease Control (CDC) have been confirmed by many other investigators.
Research has shown that enveloped viruses are inactivated by added fatty acids and monoglycerides in both human and bovine milk (Isaacs et al 1991)33. Others (Isaacs et al 198632, 199053, 199133, 199463; Thormar et al 198762) have confirmed Kabara's original statements concerning the effectiveness of monolaurin.
Some of the viruses inactivated by these lipids are the measles virus, herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 and -2), herpes family members (HIV, hepatitis C, vesicular, stomatitis virus (VSV), visna virus, and cytomegalovirus (CMV). Many of the pathogenic organisms reported to be inactivated by these antimicrobial lipids are those known to be responsible for opportunistic infections in HIV -positive individuals. For example, concurrent infection with cytomegalovirus is recognized as a serious complication for HIV positive individuals (Macallan et al 199364).
Until now few nutritionists in mainstream nutrition community seem to have recognized the added benefit of antimicrobial lipids in the support of infected patients. These antimicrobial fatty acids and their derivatives are essentially nontoxic to man. According to the published research, lauric acid is one of the best "inactivating" fatty acids, and its monoglyceride is even more effective than the fatty acid alone (Kabara 19788, Sands et al 197940, Fletcher et al 198519, Kabara 198521).

Antibacterial Effects
The potentially pathogenic bacteria inactivated by monolaurin include Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, groups A, F and G streptococci, gram-positive organisms, and some gram- negative organisms if pretreated with a chelator (Boddie and Nickerson, 199236; Kabara, 19788, 198418; Isaacs et al., 199053, 199133, 199463; Isaacs and Schneidman, 199165; Isaacs and Thormar, 198632, 199152; Thormar et al., 198762; Wang and Johnson, 199234).
Decreased growth of Staphylococcus aureus and decreased production of toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 was shown with 150 mg monolaurin per litre (Holland et al., 199430). Monolaurin was shown to be 5,000 times more inhibitory against Listeria monocytogenes than is ethanol (Oh and Marshall, 199369). Helicobacter pylori was rapidly inactivated by medium-chain monoglycerides and lauric acid, and there appeared to be very little development of resistance of the organism to the bactericidal effects of these natural antimicrobials (Petschow et al., 199670).
A number of fungi, yeast, and protozoa are also inactivated or killed by monolaurin. The fungi include several species of ringworm (Isaacs et al 199133). The yeast reported to be affected is Candida albicans (Isaacs et al 199133). The protozoan parasite Giardia lamblia is killed by monoglycerides from hydrolyzed human milk (Hemell et al 198667, Reiner et al 198666, Crouch et al 199168, Isaacs et al 199133).
Chlamydia trachomatis is inactivated by monolaurin (Bergsson et al 199825). Hydrogels containing monocaprin/monolaurin are potent in vitro inactivators of sexually transmitted viruses such as HSV-2 and HIV- 1 and bacteria such as Neisserian gonorrhea (Thormar102-103).
Monolaurin does not appear to have an adverse effect on desirable gut bacteria, but rather on only potentially pathogenic microorganisms. For example, Isaacs et al (199133) reported no inactivation of the common Esherichiacoli or Salmonella enteritidis by monolaurin, but major inactivation of Hemophilus influenza,
Staphylococcus epidermis and Group B gram positive streptococcus.
The phenomenal rate of prescriptions dispensed for antibiotic use, and to a lesser extent, antiviral has grown exponentially in the past several decades. Antibiotic has limited specificity and generally does not recognize “good” bacteria (often referred to as probiotics or forlife) from “bad” bacteria (meaning those bacteria that may cause disease.) Antibiotics try to destroy all bacteria and are usually unsuccessful.
More antibiotic therapy may start perpetuating a chronic illness. The cycle of antibiotic therapy may go on for months and months, and repetitious indiscriminate use of antibiotics destroys weak bacteria and sets up the stage for the more virulent bacteria to survive (as in survival of the fittest). The new, stronger, pathogenic bacteria are now “resistant” to the established antibiotic and another antibiotic must be found to fight the new pathogen. We are rapidly approaching that point in history of having super bacteria: disease causing bacteria that are unaffected by any antibiotic. In its failure, antibiotic therapy has taken with it the health of those same individuals it strives to help.
The great advantage of lauric acid is that it does not produce resistant microorganisms during use. Not only does auric acid not produce resistance but also it is known to help resistant organisms from forming.
A group of researchers from the University of Minnesota led by P.M. Schlievert reported in the March 199294 issue of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy that monolaurin inhibited strains of strep and staph bacteria that cause toxic shock syndrome. Other researchers also studied effectiveness of monolaurin in this area.71-100 In similar research published in October 2007101, Filipino research wrote in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology that "sensitivity rates of Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., and coagulase negative Staphylococcus, Gram-negative E. vulneris, Enterobacter spp., and Enterococcus spp. to 20 mg/mL monolaurin was 100 percent."
Most recently, Schlievert and his Minnesota colleagues demonstrated that monolaurin prevented acute simian immunodeficiency virus infection in female rhesus monkeys. The monolaurin worked by decreasing the expression of SIV toxins and reducing inflammation of vaginal walls. As the researchers wrote in Nature on April 23, 2009, their findings linking "interfering with innate host responses that recruit the target cells necessary to establish systemic infection, opens a promising new avenue for the development of effective interventions to block HIV-1 mucosal transmission."
Research continues104-124 in measuring the effects of the monoglycerin, monoglyceride derivative of capric acid, monocaprin, as well as the effects of lauric acid. Chlamydia trachomatis is inactivated by lauric acid, capric acid and monocaprin (Bergsson et al., 199825). Hydrogels containing monocaprin are potent in vitro inactivators of sexually transmitted viruses such as HSV-2 and HIV-1 and bacteria such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Thormar102- 103).

aurum metallicum - gold for cancer treatment?




During the 12th century, the Arabian medical practitioners valued gold highly for treating disorders of the heart. However, after its use by Arabian physicians, gold was not used medicinally till the early part of the 20th century when it was used for curing ailments, such as tuberculosis, and in blood examination for determining the sexually transmitted disease (STD) syphilis. Nowadays, gold is used in conventional medicine to treat rheumatoid arthritis as well as in treating cancer (I need to check this statement data). In effect, homeopathic physicians prescribe aurum met. for people who endure precise clinical complaints that may vary from depression to heart ailments.

In fact, even today physicians of different alternative forms of medicine consider metallic gold to possess healing attributes. In addition, a number of gold salts do possess anti-inflammatory attributes and are used in pharmaceuticals to treat arthritis and other analogous health conditions. Nevertheless, only the salts and radioisotopes of gold have been found to be of pharmaceutical value, since elemental or metallic gold is inactive to all chemicals that it comes across within the body.


I know..... wierd.
But I know for sure that colloidal silver is an antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, that is non irritating.
I used to put drops of it in Lucy's water for the first few months as a systemic antibiotic. She never had an infection again once I did that.(but I did do other pills as well)
If colloidal gold is similar (that's what this stuff is but in pretty small amounts...) but I also read that gold was and still is used today in the medical field.
It enhances circulation and if it does things like silver does it could start to fall into place. But I am far from saying anything on this yet. Sometimes a bread crumb is just a bread crumb, but sometimes it leads to more and then a path to something. I love Google!
Like chinese medicine using names and things for organs that really have no control over something in the real world what we know today doesn't make it invalid. The herbs still work for the things they said. I am wary of homeopathy in general and there in generally not enough evidence in trials that it works. But dogs don't have bias or need blind testing for stuff. Man, if something worked for somebody I will look into it and try to find some science behind it.
The depression aspect of it could fit because just on my limited research on autism spectrum and bipolar disorders - zinc, magnesium, calcium, and other minerals have to be in sync and in balance and some genetic subtypes do have inferior processing of these due to bad genes. Gold might affect something possibly in that complex process.

Clinical resolution of nasal aspergillosis following therapy with a homeopathic remedy in a dog.

Abstract

A 6 yr old, male, neutered Weimaraner was treated homeopathically for nasal aspergillosis after failing to respond to two treatments of topical (intranasal) clotrimazole and oral amoxicillin trihydrate/clavulanate potassium. Computed tomography, rhinoscopy, fungal culture, and cytology previously confirmed the diagnosis. At presentation for homeopathic treatment, the dog had aggressive left-sided sinusitis and rhinitis with destruction of nasal turbinates and severe bouts of epistaxis. Erosion and depigmentation of the nasal planum were evident. After two treatments with homeopathic aurum metallicum, resolution of clinical signs occurred and clearance of the aspergillosis organisms was documented by computed tomographic scan, rhinoscopy, and histopathology. Homeopathic aurum metallicum may be beneficial in treating cases of canine nasal aspergillosis.

I am wondering if it might be helpful in both cases in this does something to immune system AND help symptoms/healing of nasal destruction. I have to research it lots but it's wild anyway to see something like this in NIHM.

Desperate to avoid chemo therapy for my big ole boy I was turned on to this product by a friend. It enhances an aging immune system and pets will instinctively recognize the colostrum as something they need is what I read. I'm not entirely sure if that was the case or if it was because it smelled like cheese but my dog loves it. He didn't eat for days after his chemo pill that his vet swore was "safe" and would give little to no side effects...grrrr. Like I said, desperate to help him after I poisoned him with "medicine" I ordered this product. Sprinkled a couple of table spoons over his kibble and he ate it. First time in days he ate his kibble. My cat is the pickiest spoiled bratt ever and she even likes it. Then when I was feeling sick (from stress over my dog's illness)and toxic, run down, and fluish I added a tablespoon to my protein shake. It blends well and I didn't taste anything which was a relief because I swear it smells like cheese haha. I did the same thing the next morning and two days later I feel great and have more energy. The benefits from this natural product is amazing. If you google the benefits it does so much. As for my dog, I now have giant 8 year old puppy :)

My son had Tourrette's syndrome. (still a neurotransmitter imbalance problem) The very first remedy was aurum met. and within 4 hrs, my son was so much better, it wasn't funny. I then knew that homeopathy was going to cure him Well two yrs later my son is cured, with other remedies that followed. Streptococcus was the last remedy, to have my son cured.



So this could work on cancer AND aspergillus. Some vets even misdiagnose one or the other because they don't get a biopsy. Treatment with all my stuff and this stuff might work either case.

Colostrum immunoglobulins for dog cancer treatment



Bovine colostrum from pasture-fed cows contains immunoglobulins specific to many human pathogens, including Escherichia coli, Cryptosporidium parvum, Shigella flexneri, Salmonella, Staphylococcus,[27] and rotavirus (which causes diarrhea in infants). Before the development of antibiotics, colostrum was the main source of immunoglobulins used to fight infections. In fact, when Albert Sabin made his first oral vaccine against polio, the immunoglobulin he used came from bovine colostrum.[28] When antibiotics began to appear, interest in colostrum waned, but, now that antibiotic-resistant strains of pathogens have developed, interest is once again returning to natural alternatives to antibiotics, namely, colostrum.[29]


Proline-rich Polypeptides (PRP)

These small immune signaling peptides were independently discovered in colostrum and other sources, such as blood plasma, in the United States,[42] and Poland.[43] Hence they appear under various names in the literature, including Colostrinin, CLN, Transfer Factor and PRP. They function as signal transducing molecules that have the unique effect of modulating the immune system, turning it up when the body comes under attack from pathogens or other disease agents, and damping it when the danger is eliminated or neutralized.[44] At first thought to actually transfer immunity from one immune system to another, it now appears that PRP simply stimulates cell-mediated immunity.[45]

A 2006 study published in the Journal of Experimental Therapeutics and Oncology indicated that PRP may have an impact on the aging process by reducing the spontaneous or induced mutation frequency in the DNA of cells.[46] Such DNA damage is implicated in the general process of aging. The study, which was performed in both hamster and human cells, looked at the impact of PRP on the frequency of defined DNA mutations in these cells as they occur naturally and when induced by various known chemical or physical agents. In cells stressed oxidatively, PRP reduced the frequency of mutation induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) to nearly background levels in a dose-dependent manner. It is suggested that the antimutagenic properties of PRP are achieved via multiple mechanisms - by decreasing intracellular levels of ROS and so preventing DNA damage and by increasing the efficiency of natural DNA repair mechanisms.
PRP-rich preparations from bovine colostrum have shown some activity against various diseases including viral infections[47] of herpes viruses[48] and HIV,[49] as well as difficult to treat bacterial and fungal infections (MIGHT THIS HELP WITH DOG NASAL ASPERGILLUS FUNGAL INFECTIONS AS WELL?) like Mycobacterium fortuitum[50] and Mycobacterium tuberculosis[51] (cause of tuberculosis), cryptosporidosis in AIDS patients,[52] and candida.[53] Also for various forms of cancer, such as Hodgkin's disease,[54] osteogenic sarcoma,[55] prostate cancer,[56] and others. As an immune modulator, PRP is also effective in disease states characterized by an overactive immune system, such as allergies,[57][58] asthma,[59] and autoimmune diseases.[60]


Colostrum also has antioxidant components, such as lactoferrin[39] and hemopexin, which binds free heme in the body.[40]

Oral and Nasal Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Dogs



The squamous cell carcinoma is often one of the most heart-breaking tumors any living being can develop. The tumor is rapidly invasive locally but does not spread in the way we usually think of a cancer spreading until late in its course. This would seem to be a positive aspect lending itself to potential surgical removal and cure, but unfortunately that’s usually not the case. The tumor tends to arise in locations where surgery is challenging or where the tumor isn’t detectable until surgery is no longer possible. 
Before reviewing some of the more classical presentations of this tumor, let’s address what squamous cells are. Our bodies must interface with the outside world in several areas: our skin, our mouth and nose, our entire gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract and even urinary and reproductive tracts. All these areas are accessible from the outside world, if not directly like the skin is, then via some sort of opening like the urinary or GI tract. The cells that line these are areas are called epithelial cells and they can take many shapes depending on whether their job is to protect us from the environment (skin), absorb material from the environment (GI tract), or perform some other sort of job (respiratory tract). Epithelial cells also line our body cavities, the outside of our organs and blood vessels, and form a thin casing.   
Squamous epithelial cells are flat plate-like cells that form layers, a sort of a microscopic armor against the wear and tear that comes from interfacing with the environment. The squamous cells make up the outer layer of the skin, nose, and mouth.   
The squamous cell carcinoma (sometimes called simply a squame) arises when the body’s squamous cells become tumorous. Some classical presentations include:  
     
  • Sun-induced skin cancer (especially in white faced cats and white dogs)
  • Nasal squamous cell carcinoma of cats
  • Oral squamous cell carcinoma of cats
  • Nasal squamous cell carcinoma of dogs (especially long nosed breeds)
  • The nail bed squamous cell carcinoma of dogs
  • The squamous cell carcinoma in situ/Bowen’s disease

Introduction
  • Cancer of the nasal cavity accounts for 1% of all cancers in the dog.
  • About 80% of all nasal tumors in dogs are malignant.
  • Nasal cavity cancer tends to be a locally invasive disease. Late in the course of the disease, the cancer can spread to other parts of the body, with the lungs being the most common site. In one study, 0 to 12% of cases were found to have metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis; however, at the time of death, 46% of the dogs had evidence of spread of the cancer to lymph nodes and lungs.
  • The most common type of cancer that affects the nasal cavity in dogs is the carcinoma. This type of cancer includes nasal adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and undifferentiated carcinoma and consists of 2/3's of all types of nasal tumors.
Clinical signs
  • The average age of dogs with nasal cavity cancer is 10 years and males are slightly more affected by this tumor than females. Medium to large breeds more commonly develop nasal cavity cancer than small breeds.
  • Clinical signs of nasal cancer include bleeding from the nose, white, yellow or green nasal discharge, deformity of the face and tearing from one or both eyes.
Diagnosis
  • Although the aforementioned clinical signs can be due to intranasal cancer, other causes may include high blood pressure, fungal infection and allergies. If your pet has depigmentation of the nose and nasal discharge, fungal infection is likely to the be cause versus cancer.
  • The first tests that are run include blood work such as a complete blood count, biochemistry profile, urinalysis and clotting profile.
  • Chest radiographs (x-rays) are made to evaluate that patient for spread of the tumor to the lungs.
  • Radiographs of the nasal cavity are generally of little diagnostic value to the clinician, therefore CT scan is recommended. This diagnostic modality will give the veterinarian a very good idea as to the type of disease process present (cancer vs. fungal infection) and the extent of the disease.
  • Definitive diagnosis of a nasal tumor is based on the evaluation of a biopsy of the tumor and is typically performed at the time of a nasal CT scan. Anesthesia is required for both procedures.
Treatment options
  • No treatment is an option, however survival times following diagnosis of a malignant intranasal cancer is quite short. One study showed a median survival time of 95 days. Dogs that had bloody nasal discharge had a median survival time of 88 days versus those dogs that did not have blood in the nasal discharge had a median survival time of 224 days.
  • Surgery alone results in median survival times that are less than six months, therefore is not recommended as the sole treatment.
  • Surgery followed by orthovoltage radiation therapy resulted in a median survival time of 23 months in one study, however other studies have not been able to reproduce these results. The type of radiation therapy seems to play a role in patient survival. One study which included 42 dogs, showed that surgery and orthovoltage radiation therapy was inferior to megavoltage radiation therapy reported in other studies.
  • Radiation therapy followed by surgical removal of the contents of the nasal cavity has given the longest survival times. In Adam's study (2005) of 53 dogs, the median survival time was 19.7 months with radiation alone and 47.7 months with 10 doses of 4.2 Gy per dose and subsequent surgery. Currently, this seems to be the best treatment for dogs that have intranasal tumors.
  • Photodynamic therapy (injection of the patient with a special light sensitizer and illumination of the site with a special light) has been reported in 4 cases and resulted in clinical remission of the cancer in the patients that had epithelial tumors, but not the dog that had a sarcoma.
  • Chemotherapy (carboplatin, adriamycin and piroxicam) has been reported in a series of 8 cases, in which 75% responded to treatment. Disease free intervals in the responding patients ranged from 150 to 510 days. This treatment may be a consideration if radiation therapy is not an option.
Complications
  • Recurrence of the tumor in most cases is expected.
  • Chronic nasal discharge and recurrent infection in the nasal cavity is a common problem following radiation and surgery of the nasal cavity, thus intermittent treatment with antibiotics may be needed.
  • Side effects of radiation include:
    • loss of hair over the bridge of the nose
    • chronic nonhealing wounds over the bridge of the nose
    • mucositis (sores in the mouth)
    • brain damage
    • blindness due to cataracts or damage to the eyes
    • oronasal fistulae - a hole that develops in the mouth that communicates with the nasal cavity
Summary of prognostic factors in dogs
  • Dogs afflicted with a nasal cavity tumor tend to have a shorter life span with
    • bloody nasal discharge
    • age greater than 10 years
    • sex: males
    • metastasis of the cancer at the time of diagnosis
    • failure of resolution of clinical signs following radiation therapy
    • please note that just because your dog may have one or more of these factors does not mean that treatment will not extend quality of life
Specifics about cats and nasal cavity tumors
  • Ninety-two percent of all nasal cavity tumors are malignant.
  • Lymphoma is the most common cancer that affects the nasal cavity in cats. In a study of 123 cats afflicted with nasal cavity cancer, the second most common cancer was carcinomas (adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma). Older cats are generally affected with a median age of 9 months in one study.
  • The most common clinical signs include nasal discharge, sneezing and vomiting. Other signs include loss of appetite, breathing difficulty and decreased activity.
  • On study showed that lymphoma may be localized to the nasal cavity (in about one third of the cases) and radiation therapy may be the treatment of choice. Cats that are infected with Feline Leukemia Virus or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus generally do not do as well and development of lymphpoma in other parts of the body are quite possible. Almost all cases are B-cell lymphoma. Nasal lymphoma tends to be more resistant to chemotherapy than other forms of lymphoma.
  • In a report of 19 cats that had stage 1 intranasal lymphoma, treatment with radiation and chemotherapy resulted in a disease free interval of 31 months and a median survival time of 31.4 months. Based on the fact that 17.6% of the cases had recurrences in distant locations, radiation therapy is not recommended as a sole treatment and chemotherapy should be also used.
  • In a series of 8 cats with nonlymphomatous intranasal tumors treated with course fraction megavoltage radiation (4 to 6 treatments) the median survival time was 382 days.

Treating Dog Cancer with Chinese Herbs


Studies have shown that about 90% of cancer patients have sub clinical thyroid deficiency. DHEA and melatonin are also low in most cancer patients and many others with chronic diseases.
Proper nutrition is essential in successful cancer therapy. Cancer is a wasting disease. Forty percent of cancer patients actually die from malnutrition. You cannot fight a life-threatening disease while malnourished.


TCM (TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE)


According to the Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University (CSU), cancer is the No. 1 cause of death in geriatric dogs and cats. Nearly half the deaths of companion dogs and cats are from cancer. Roughly half of all dogs and cats will develop cancer if they live to be 10 or older. A recent CSU oncology study involving 254 clients showed that 76 percent of clients used complementary and alternative medical (CAM) therapies, with nutritional supplements the most commonly used. More than half the clients indicated strong interest in CAM; 40 percent expressed average interest, and 3 percent reported no interest. Keum Hwa Choi, Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, reported that patients receiving both conventional and Traditional Oriental Medicine therapies had better survival rates, longer duration of remission and quality of life than those patients who did not utilize both systems of medicine.

While the ultimate goal in treating neoplasia is complete and permanent remission, that is sadly unattainable with Western medicine, alternative modalities, or various combinations thereof.

Food Therapy for Cancer Patients

The nutritional status of cancer patients is often suboptimal due to the effects of cancer itself and nutrient loss via vomiting, diarrhea, effusion/exudate production, GI obstruction and blood/body fluid loss. Additionally, tumors preferentially utilize glucose for metabolic energy and trap nitrogen from glutamine and other amino acids for protein synthesis. Anorexia and insulin resistance may also result from tumor secretions and the secondary production of cytokines.

There is a synergism of treatments when utilizing TCM. Food therapy is critical to the treatment of cancer as most of our commercially available pet foods promote root causes of cancer in TCM.

As cancer cells seem to utilize simple carbohydrates, complex carbohydrates, protein and fat in descending order, the knee jerk reaction is to feed a no to low carbohydrate diet.  Some believe that increased glycemic load (glycemic index multiplied by grams of carbohydrate per serving size) results in the increased of certain forms of cancer. Although we are all hesitant to recommend any radical diet change without thoughtful and educated consideration, clinical results in this area can speak volumes.  In general, when feeding a cancer patient, a ratio of 50-60:15-30:25-35 (protein: mostly low glycemic index carbohydrates: lightly cooked vegetables) is followed. Supplementation with fish oil, digestive enzymes, probiotics and vitamin-minerals is also recommended. The patient's nutritional status should be followed closely as ration adjustments or supplementation with more oil/substitution with olive oil, flax seed oil or borage oil may be required due to weight loss or intolerance of fish oil.

Aspergillus fungal infection and nasal neoplasia are the 2 most common diagnoses in dogs referred with signs of chronic rhino-sinusitis. Dolichocephalic and mesocephalic large breeds dogs are most commonly affected. Sinonasal tumors are diagnosed in 33% of middle- to old-aged dogs, while aspergillosis is diagnosed in 12% to 34% of young to middle-aged dogs. Several systemic and topical antimycotic agents have been evaluated for treatment of canine sinonasal aspergillosis. Different techniques for the administration of clotrimazole solution or enilconazole emulsion have been successfully used for the treatment of sinonasal aspergillosis .

"Diagnosis of nasal aspergillosis and nasal tumor should be based on history and physical examination, imaging, endoscopy, and histopathological examination. 
Most frequent clinical signs in dogs affected by sinonasal aspergillosis and sinonasal tumor are nasal discharge, epistaxis, reverse sneezing, and sneezing. However, profuse purulent-hemorrhagic discharge, nasal planum alterations such as discoloration of the nostrils, crusts, erosion, ulcers and hyperkeratosis, and nasal pain are considered landmarks of nasal aspergillosis. Conversely, these clinical signs in the presence of decreased air passage through the nostril and snoring but absence of nasal planum alteration are more suggestive of nasal tumor.


Aspergillosis treatment for dogs

As long as the disease is limited to nasal and paranasal parts of the dog, topical treatment is preferred in most situations. Most veterinarians opt for Clotrimazole to begin with. This drug can either be administered as a single infusion through the nares or via the frontal sinuses of the dog. Local infusions normally cure 4 out of 5 dogs with nasal and paranasal Aspergillosis.
When the Clotrimazole is given through the nares, foley catheters are normally used to instill 0.5 g of Clotrimazole in each side of the dog's nasal cavity. The infusion is then left there for 60 minutes, during which the veterinarian will turn the dog around once in a while to increase penetration and make sure that the drug spreads out as much as possible.
Enilconazole is an alternative to Clotrimazole treatment and have a similar success rate. When Enilconazole is used, tubes are implanted surgically into the frontal sinuses of the dog. Enilconazole is then used in the form of instilled bid for 1-2 weeks. The normal dose is 10mg per kilogram body weight.
If local treatment is not enough, anti- Aspergillosis drugs can be given systemically. Examples of drugs that work in such treatments are Itraconazole, Fluconazole and Ketoconazole. Itraconazole and Fluconazole tend to be more effective than Ketoconazole. The standard dose for Itraconazole is 5-10 mg per kg bodyweight given once a day, while the dose for Fluconazole varies from 2.5 to 10 mg/kg and should be divided into several servings per day. If Ketoconazole is used, 5-10 mg/kg bodyweight should be given once a day for 6-8 week"




Aspergillosis Symptoms
YOU NEED TO USE DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSING
A fungal infection of your dog’s nasal and respiratory tract may involve the following symptoms:
  • Sneezing
  • Nasal pain
  • Bleeding from the nose
  • Visibly swollen nose
  • Nasal discharge which may contain mucus, blood and/or pus

  • Symptoms of nasal aspergillosis include sneezing, nasal pain, bleeding from the nose, reduced appetite, visibly swollen nose, and long-term nasal discharge from the nostril(s), which may contain mucus, pus and/or blood. In some cases, loss of pigment or tissue on the surface of the skin nose may also occur.
    Symptoms of disseminated aspergillosis in dogs may develop suddenly or slowly over a period of several months, and include spinal pain or lameness due to infection, and cause inflammation of the animal’s bone marrow and bones. Other signs which aren’t specific to the disease include fever, weight loss, vomiting, and anorexia.

Your veterinarian can determine nasal aspergillosis through a nasal swab or x-rays and/or a cat scan of the nose and sinuses. If the fungus has spread, spinal or other orthopedic x-rays or further blood testing may be required.

    Aspergillosis can be quite difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are common to many respiratory disorders. But examining a tissue sample (biopsy) is the most reliable diagnostic tool. Researchers are currently attempting to develop a practical, specific, and rapid blood test that would confirm Aspergillus infection.
    Diagnostic procedures vary depending on whether the case is nasal or disseminated. For suspected nasal aspergillosis, analysis of nasal swabs, fungal cultures of nasal discharge, and a rhinoscopy -- inserting a small fiber-optic scope into the nose in order to examine the inside of the nose and its mucus linings -- can be expected. The symptoms for disseminated aspergillosis are mostly nonspecific and therefore more difficult to diagnose. Tests may include a urine analysis and X-rays to examine the spine.

    There are three symptoms that are characteristic of aspergillosis:
    • A profuse, clear to opaque discharge from the nostrils that may alternate with episodes of nose bleeding.
    • Ulcerations on the external part of the nose.
    • Pain or discomfort in the nose or facial area.
    One, two, or three of these symptoms are usually present in infections with Aspergillus.

    How is aspergillosis diagnosed?
    There are several ways to obtain a positive diagnosis of aspergillosis. Swabs of the nasal area that are examined under the microscope are sometimes diagnostic, as are fungal cultures of the area. However, many times these fail to identify the organisms and could also be positive in a dog whose symptoms are not due to the Aspergillus; i.e., many normal animals may have Aspergillus in their nasal passages. Therefore, their use in detecting aspergillosis usually is not recommended. Radiographs (x-rays) of the sinuses and nasal areas often reveal a destruction of the bones in the sinuses. Nasal cancer also does this to bone, however.
    The use of a small flexible bronchoscope to examine and obtain a biopsy of an infected area inside the nasal cavity or sinus is another effective diagnostic technique. There are also several blood tests including the AGID and ELISA tests that have given fairly accurate results and are a useful diagnostic tool.
    Diagnosis is generally made through use of several of these diagnostic techniques. When a dog presents with nasal bleeding and discharge, it is important to differentiate between a tumor and aspergillosis. With a tumor, we rarely see ulcerations on the nose or nasal pain which are trademarks of aspergillosis."{

Nasal aspergillosis Nasal aspergillosis is the most commonly diagnosed form of aspergillosis in dogs. Most cases of nasal aspergillosis are invasive meaning that the fungus destroys the delicate bones of the sinuses. The less common and less invasive forms of nasal aspergillosis create an accumulation of mucous and fungus commonly referred to as a "fungal ball" or "aspergilloma." What the pet owner observes is a chronic nasal discharge ("snotty nose") that often has a strong odor, lasts for weeks to months, does not respond to antibiotics or other common therapies and typically involves only one nostril. Nosebleeds may occur intermittently and the edges of the nostrils are often rough, inflamed and ulcerated (the tissue ulcerates because of the discharge, which is very irritating). Many times the affected dog is of a breed with a long nose (collie, greyhound, dachshund, etc.) although one recent study revealed retrievers and Rottweilers to have the highest incidence of infection; it is possible that the affected dogs lived in an area with high levels of pathogenic Aspergillus. However, it is important to note that any dog can develop nasal aspergillosis."
