"Cancer represents a unique state whereby the body's healing system fails to eliminate cells with damaged or altered DNA. This allows these cells to escape the normal regulatory signals leading to uncontrolled cell growth. While most auto-immune diseases represent a failure of the healing system from an over-active immune system, cancer represents the extreme opposite, whereby the immune system is hypoactive (at least in regard to the tumor).

While we are beginning to unravel the complex biochemistry of cancer development and have begun to understand how DNA is damaged and repaired, we still have a long way to go before the cure for cancer will be found. Spontaneous healing of cancer has been documented many times in human beings and animals, suggesting that a cure is possible.


Chemotherapy uses compounds which are toxic to the body and destroys the animal's immune system, hoping that the tumor is killed before the patient. While animals do not suffer all of the side-effects as human beings undergoing radiation therapy or chemotherapy, these treatments can still have significant and, in some cases, life-threatening side-effects in dogs. Owners must weigh the benefits and the risks carefully before making the decision to put their pet through radiation treatments or chemotherapy.

To me, the answer to cancer lies in the immune system. This is the major reason why I have trouble with chemotherapy. Spontaneous remission from cancer only occurs when the patient's immune system acts to clear the cancer. Therefore, stimulation of the patient's immune system to selectively attack the cancer seems to be the key to achieving a successful outcome. New methods in immunotherapy and immunotargeted chemotherapy are likely be the Western methods which lead to the greatest advances in cancer treatment over the next few decades.
Traditional Eastern medicine has also been used successfully in the treatment of cancer for thousands of years, long before we understood the basic pathobiology of tumors. It is not a replacement for Western diagnosis and therapy, but may be used with Western approaches to help heal patients. When the option for Western therapy is lacking, there are Eastern therapies which can be employed to help the patient live a quality life, reducing the rate to cancer expansion or, in some cases, leading to remission of the cancer. Eastern medicine may be best suited to prevention of the development of cancer through healthy living. On the other hand, herbal medications have been shown to lead to spontaneous remissions of cancer. In some cases, these herbal products can be used in conjunction with traditional Western therapies, improving the outcome and reducing the side-effects from Western therapy alone. An integrative approach combining the best of both Western and Eastern medicine seems to be the only sensible course of action, providing the best overall care for the patient.
Reducing risk factors for cancer, eating a properly balanced diet (free of pesticides and preservatives), drinking pure water, providing appropriate anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals, and exercising regularly can help prevent cancer. Once cancer has been found, additional supportive measures are needed. Cancer cells utilize carbohydrates for fuel and compete for the body for amino acids. However, these cancer cells do not metabolize fats. Some data suggests that high fat diets can help the patient overcome the effects of cancer and even reduce cancer expansion. A number of herbal products can stimulate the immune system to attack cancer or block the mediators which the tumor uses to spread to other areas of the body, mediators which the tumor needs to survive. The following is a guide to the integrative treatment of cancer, using those compounds where there is scientific data to support their use in cancer management, helping the patient survive the disease.

Although eating healthy is the best tool in the fight against cancer, once cancer takes hold certain dietary changes may be help the patient fight against the effects of the cancer. Tumor cells rely heavily upon carbohydrates for their energy and rob the body of amino acids. On the other hand, tumor cells cannot utilize lipids (fats) for energy while the rest of the body can. As such, diets with increased fat content may slow tumor growth, allowing the patient to fight against the tumor. Protein content must be maintained a levels sufficient for tissue repair, but carbohydrates should be held to a minimum. For those who prefer to prepare their dogs food, the following diet contains the ingredients important for cancer patients. In addition, it supplies the important nutrients for cancer protection. For those who can not cook for their dog, a commercial food should be of good quality, moderate protein (AT LEAST 22%) content, low carbohydrate (3-13%) content, and high fat (55-60%) content."

Vitamins & Antioxidants:
The vitamins and antioxidants for cancer patients are the same for all dogs, including vitamin E, vitamin C, selenium, beta-carotene, ginkgo bilboa, green tea and grape seed extract. In addition, the membrane stabilizers omega-3-fatty acids, gammalinolenic acid and coenzyme Q-10 are important for cancer patients. Many of the antioxidants help stabilize DNA and help reduce cancer development or progression. Some data suggests that antioxidants can reduce the effectiveness of radiation and chemotherapy, but this is not well documented. It may be best to stop antioxidants 3 days before radiation therapy or at the start of chemotherapy, reinstituting the antioxidants a few days later. Most of the herbal antioxidants are good for preventing cancer, too.

Immunostimulants:

Astragalus:
Another Chinese herbal remedy with similar properties comes from the root of a plant in the pea family, Astragalus membranaceus. This plant is a relative of our locoweed, which is toxic to livestock. The Chinese species is nontoxic, the source of a very popular medicine called huang qi that you can buy in any drugstore in China for use against colds, flus, and other respiratory infections. Recent studies in the West confirm its antiviral and immune-boosting effects, and preparations are now available in most health food stores here. Follow the directions for adult dosing.

Anti-Cancer herbs:

Cat's Claw (una de gato):
Cat's claw (name derived from the pattern of thorns found on the vines), Uncaria tomentosa, comes from the Peruvian rain forest and was traditional used by the indigenous people to threat cancer and arthritis. Recent studies indicate that it contains immune-enhancing substances, including several antioxidant compounds. These compounds may account for the antitumor properties reported for cat's claw. Treatments have been reported to lead to remission of brain and other tumors. While published data is lacking, cat's claw should be considered in tumors of the central nervous system. Use ¼ the adult human dose for small dogs, ½ for medium dogs and the equivalent dose in large dogs.

Reishi and Maitake Mushrooms:
Like astragalus, mushroom extracts stimulate the patient's immune system by presenting unique macromolecules to the intestinal tract, where they alter the immune regulation by intestinal antigen processing systems. In addition, maitake mushroom extract has been shown to activate NK Killer cells which attack tumor cells and to prevent destruction of T-Helper cells. There is no known toxicity from these mushroom extracts. Use ¼ the adult human dose for small dogs, ½ for medium dogs and the equivalent dose in large dogs.



Other Dietary Supplements:

Milk Thistle:
Milk thistle is an herbal product that helps protect the liver from toxic damage. It may be useful in treating chronic active hepatitis or as a prevention of injury from other drugs. It has been used to protect the liver from damage from chemotherapy in human patients. It may also help prevent
damage from traditional anti-convulsants (phenobarbital). I recommend starting at 1 capsule twice a day.

Amygdalin (Laetrile) – also known as Vitamin B17, amygdalin is found in the seeds of apricots, peaches, cherries and plums. I have very little experience in using this in animals. No evidence of curative responses.

Arginine (L–Arginine) – an amino acid shown to have some cancer fighting properties when extra supplementation is added to diet. I recommend 500mg. to 1500mg. daily added to food. Available online and in health food stores.

Artemisinin  – an extract of sweet wormwood from China used mainly as an anti-malarial drug but may have cancer fighting properties. There have been several recent articles about using this with osteosarcoma. Anti-oxidants may interfere with effectiveness if given within 6 hours. Toxicity is very low. Dosages in the range of 80mg. to 100mg. twice daily for a large dog have been proposed. Available online

Astragalus – see Chinese Herbs




Bioflavonoids – found in foods containing Vitamin C. Compounds such as citrin, hesperidin, rutin, and quercetin. Seem to support the anti-oxidant properties of Vitamin C.

Brewer's Yeast: Has been shown to help animals resist infection. It is a rich source of B vitamins, amino acids, selenium, chromium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, manganese, iron, zinc, and other trace elements. (Natural Remedies for Dogs and Cats by CJ Puotinen)

Carnivora – extract of the Venus Flytrap, an insect eating plant. Seems to have cancer fighting properties but probably works by stimulation of T-helper cells. I have not seen any dramatic or significant results in cases where this was used. Dosage extrapolated from human dosages. Expensive. I have concern for environmental impact to the plant. It is a rare species. Available online.

Cat’s Claw (Una de gato) – from the vine of a Peruvian plant. Has anti-oxidant and immune enhancing properties. May be useful. Use extrapolated human dosages. Widely available.

Chinese Herbs - There are many Chinese herbal combinations for cancer therapy. The two I most often use in my practice are Astragalus 10+, a combination of Astragalus and ten other herbs to boost the immune system, and Chih-ko and Circuma, a tumor fighting combination of herbs. Dosages vary.

Chlorella – a fresh-water, single celled algae taken for high chlorophyll content, anti-oxidant effect, and high vitamin content. Seems to have cancer fighting properties. Larger doses may be more effective. Widely available.

CoEnzyme Q10- naturally occurring substance found in sardines, soybean and grapeseed oils, sesame seeds, pistachios, and spinach. Seems to have cancer fighting properties when given at the 300mg. per day level or greater. Expensive at high doses. Widely available.

Colostrum – first milk from cow’s after parturition. Has immune factors that help boost T-helper Cells along with other immune boosting properties. Most beneficial in high doses. Widely available, online and health food stores. See Transfer Factor also.

Curcumin (Tumeric) – yellow pigment that is the main component of Tumeric, an Indian herb in the ginger family. Seems to have anti-carcinogenic properties at many levels of cancer as a prevention and treatment. Has been used effectively for tumor shrinkage topically as a paste also. Exact dosages unknown. Available in grocery stores and specialty stores.

Echinacea – an herbal stimulant for the immune system. Doesn’t seem to be of use in cancer. Better used as an herbal for acute infections. Astragalus is better for cancer use.

Essiac – a combination of herbals taken as a tea, tincture or capsule. Formulas vary somewhat but all contain burdock, Indian rhubarb, sheep sorrel, and slippery elm. Historically has been given in treating cancer both for pain relief and tumor shrinkage. Mainly the effects seem palliative; recent use for treating cancer seems less effective. My research would agree with the latter. I have seen very little in positive responses. Essiac is Caisse spelled backwards, the last name of the Canadian woman who formulated the herbal combination. The recipe was originally from a Native American Tribe based in Ontario, Canada. Widely available in many forms. Dosages extrapolated from human dose.

Evening Primrose Oil: This oil stimulates the thymus to produce t-cells, which help fight infection and cancer. (Keeping Your Dog Healthy the Natural Way by Pat Lazarus)
GLA from evening primrose oil, have been found to kill a number of tumor-cell lines and cause a significant reduction in tumor growth in animal studies. (Herbal Medicine, Healing & Cancer" by Donald Yance)

Fish Oil – a rich source of Omega 3’s which have been shown to have cancer fighting and preventative effects. Salmon Oil is probably the best source. Dosages range from 1000mg. to 5000mg. daily. Found in many combination products with Flaxseed Oil and Borage Oil. Straight Fish Oil seems better utilized for dogs and cats, whereas the combination products work well for people. Widely available.

Flaxseed Oil – used the same way as fish oil. Often used in combination with cottage cheese to fight cancer.

Goldenseal – used as herbal immune stimulant. Astragalus seems more appropriate.

Grapeseed Extract (Pycnogenol) – a potent anti-oxidant. Useful as a part of any cancer protocol. Dosages are 1-2 mg. per lb. body weight per day. Doesn’t seem useful in higher dosages. Widely available. Some think Pycnogenol, a similar substance extracted from Pine Bark, is more potent. It is also more expensive.

Green Tea – seems to have several anti-carcinogenic properties both for prevention and treatment. May be impractical, as large amounts are probably required to have much effect therapeutically. Widely available.

Hoxsey Formula – similar to Essiac and Objiwa - a combination of herbals containing red clover, buckthorn bark, barberry bark, chaparral, licorice root, Cascara amarga, and prickly ash bark. Bloodroot is sometimes added to make an external formula for topical application. There are many formulations available. There are no studies supporting its effectiveness.

Inositol – an unofficial B-vitamin. Found in many high fiber foods. Converted to lecithin in the body. May have some cancer fighting properties such as angiogenesis or the reduction of blood supply to tumors. IP6 is similar.  Dosages extrapolated from human dosages. Widely available.

Iscador (Mistletoe) – fermented extracts from European mistletoe. Often injected, rather than taken orally. Used widely in Europe. Has had only mixed results in research, although varieties of extracts available to me have been limited.

Maitake Mushrooms (Shitake) – stimulates T-helper cells and generally boosts the immune system. Potent immune boosters. Found in many combination products. Dosages extrapolated from human dosages. Widely available.

NAC – N-acetyl-cysteine
 - all natural supplements that stimulate the production of glutathione in the cells.  Glutathione is the ultimate antioxidant, because it is the one that works at the mitochondrial level within the cell.  Both as a cancer preventative and an adjunct therapy where cancer is already present, I strongly recommend these products and use it as part of my protocol.  Glutathione is classified as an “orphan drug” (though not a drug at all) by the FDA for promoting weight gain and preventing weight loss with cancer patients.  It also has a strong anti-inflammatory effect with the addition of Cordyceps mushrooms, plus the glutathione produced destroys free-radicals and restores normal cellular function.



Nosodes (Isodes) – remedies made from cancer cells or tumors and taken orally or injected. These can be made specifically from the patient’s own tumor (Isode) or a generic tumor can be used (Nosode). These are diluted and succussed and work homeopathically. I have read about some results with this approach depending on the type of cancer and the patient. Hard to find.

Omega 3’s – active ingredient in Fish Oils, Flaxseed Oils and Borage Oil. Helpful in prevention and treatment of cancer.


Poly MVA – supposedly a DNA nutrient that repairs abnormal genes that have set the cancer cascade in motion. A natural substance generally well-tolerated, I have seen some cats react adversely to it. Considered a mineral-vitamin. I have seen little difference in cases where this was used. Very expensive. Dosages extrapolated from human dosages.

Pycnogenol – see Grapeseed Extract

Quercetin – a bioflavonoid. Seems most helpful with stomach cancers. Dosages extrapolated from human dosage. Available online and in health food stores.

Selenium – trace mineral complimentary and synergistically with Vitamin E. Helpful in prevention of cancer and may be useful in treatment in conjunction with Vitamin E. Mega doses not recommended. Dosages range from 50 to 200mcg. Daily. Readily available.

Shark Cartilage – usage is based on the premise that sharks don’t get cancer. That is not science. Research does not have much going for it. I have not seen any results with shark cartilage use and I object to the harvesting of sharks for this purpose. Amounts required are completely impractical for cats.

Soy Products – anti-carcinogenic effects from fermented soy products have been shown in people. Carnivores don’t metabolize soy protein very effectively and this doesn’t seem to be an effective part of therapy for dogs and cats.

Spirulina – another “green” supplement. See Chorella.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) – neutralizes free radicals that cause cancer and that cancer cells release. An anti-oxidant enzyme. Widely available. Dosages extrapolated for human doses.

Tamoxifen – blocks estrogen activity that stimulates certain cancers such as mammary tumors. Dosages extrapolated. Prescription medication.

Transfer Factors (Transfer Factor Plus) – extracts of colostrums where the immune factors have been concentrated into a supplement. Much more specific and concentrated than colostrums, but can be used in conjunction with each other.

Vitamins A and D are fat soluble and can be overdosed if given high dosages every day.

B vitamins are water soluble and excess will be excreted, so overdosing is not a problem. In general, giving a B-complex is best so as to keep ratios in line between different B’s. Giving a 10mg. complex to cats and up to a 100mg. complex for larger dogs is appropriate.

Vitamin C can be dosed high or low. In general, I recommend about 500mg. for a cat daily and up to 2000mg. for a large dog. At these levels any type of Vitamin C can be used for most animals. If you choose to give higher doses, then you should use Ester C’s should be used to avoid stomach difficulties.

Vitamin E should be given dosing from 100 IU’s daily for cats to 400 IU’s daily for large dogs. There is no evidence to show higher doses are beneficial especially when other anti-oxidants are being given.

Willard’s Water – a blend of minerals with water in a concentrate. Adding one ounce per gallon of drinking water seems to facilitate the removal of heavy metals from the system. May be useful in helping to detoxify while undergoing cancer therapy.

Wobenzyme – a German formulation of digestive enzymes that may be helpful in an overall cancer protocol. Formulations contain lipase, amylase, rutin, pancreatin, papain, bromelain, trypsin, and chymotrypsin. Dosages extrapolated from human dosages. "

Effects of Panax or Korean Red Ginseng on Cancer

Red or Panax ginseng is used in traditional Chinese medicine as a prophylactic, a stimulant, and a
treatment for various diseases. In addition, ginseng has been found to enhance the immune
system and possess an anti-tumor effect. Ginseng appears to stimulate humoral and cellmediated
immune responses and the subsequent increase in titers of lymphocytes and circulating
antibodies. Furthermore, ginseng's cancer-prevention properties seem to be mediated through
the increased production of interferons and cytokines, which activate natural killer and cytotoxic
T-cells that can served to lyse or inhibit growing tumors. Both clinical and epidemiological studies
indicated that Panax ginseng can reduce the incidence of cancer in vivo. These results suggest
that ginseng shows antitumor effects as an immunomodulator.

Introduction
Korean Red (Panax) Ginseng is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that has occupied an esteemed
position among the tonic medications since antiquity and has become quite popular
among the patrons of health food stores. The term ginseng means "essence of man"
because it has been touted as a revitalizing agent. Ginseng has been used for several
thousands of years in the Orient as a tonic, prophylactic agent, and restorative. Other
people have found that it enhances the immune system and possess anti-tumor effects.
Recent studies have reported that saponin from Panax ginseng protects against
myocardial and cerebral ischemic damage in different animal models (1).

Perhaps one of the most fascinating and potentially therapeutic effects of Panax ginseng
is its ability to enhance the immune response in the body. Recent studies have
investigated the effects of ginseng on the immune system in order to find new possible
components that may support the treatment of infectious and immunodeficient diseases.

Ginseng has been shown to slow growing tumors and inhibit the incidence of lung
adenoma (6). In epidemiological studies, ginseng uptake reduces the incidence of human
cancer (6). It has been suggested that ginseng may increase activity in the nonspecific
resistance of an organism to combat tumor growth. This paper will evaluate the effects of
ginseng on the immune system in animal studies and recent clinical evaluations. Perhaps
by understanding the effects of Panax ginseng, we can study its possible effects of
preventing cancer.

Immuno-mediating Effects
The landmark paper which first evaluated the effect of ginseng extract on the expression
of humoral and cell mediated immune responses showed that the number of antibody
forming cells, as well as the titers of circulatory antibodies, are enhanced if test animals
are pretreated with ginseng extract. On the fourth day after the injection of the antigen
(sheep's red blood cells) in mice, the antibody titer of the ginseng treated group was twofold
higher than that of the control group; on the tenth day, the treated group showed a
four-fold higher titer. They also had data that showed elevated natural killer (NK) cell
activity in comparison to control animals. These experiments led the way in determining
ginseng's immunostimulatory effects (7).

The use of polysaccharides from plants and herbs as immunostimulants has aroused great
interest in recent years. Immunotherapy is currently receiving great attention as support
treatment modalities in the management of cancer and AIDS patients whose immune
function is compromised. The polysaccharides extracted from Panax ginseng have been
investigated to determine their effects on the immune system. These polysaccharide
fractions were all tested for their anticomplementary activities using human serum and
antibody-sensitized sheep RBC. Complement systems play an important role in fighting
against various infections and tumors. Those active polysaccharides were found to be
able to stimulate the complement system possibly by enhancing the production of
interferon y (INF-y) by activated T-cells. INF-y is important in immune defense against
various viral infections and in the regulation of cell-mediated immune response.
Interferons are secreted by an infected cell as an early, non-specific defense before
specific antibodies appear. Interferons can protect uninfected cells by stimulating the
production of proteins that inhibit viral replication. Furthermore, the defense is not virus specific;
interferons produced in response to one viral strain confer resistance to unrelated
viruses. Thus, interferons are most effective in controlling short-term infections, such as
cold and influenza. This effect of ginseng is confirmed by Scoglione et al. (11) which
shows that a standardized extract of ginseng could induce a higher immune response in
vaccination against influenza.

 In a randomized, placebo controlled, double blind investigation of 227 volunteers, the frequency of influenza or the common cold was significantly less (p<0.001) in volunteers who received daily oral doses of ginseng as opposed to a placebo group (11). By the eighth week, antibody titers rose to an average of 272 units in the treatment group as opposed to 171 units in the placebo group (p<0.0001).
At concentrations from nanomolar to low micromolar range, ginseng polysaccharides can
significantly induce the production of TNF-a by mouse peritoneal macrophages (8). TNFa
has profound effects in the immune system, including tumor, cytotoxic, antiviral, and
anti-parasitic activities. TNF-a also causes inflammation and endotoxic shock, which may
be responsible for some possible side effects of polysaccharides. Thus, one of the
hypothesized activities of ginseng extracts is that they stimulate the complement system
by enhancing the production of INF-y and TNF-a .

Ginseng has also significantly enhanced natural killer cell function, which is part of the
body's nonspecific defense mechanisms. The ability of ginseng to boost NK cell activity
hints at its cancer preventive mechanisms. NK cells do not attack microorganisms
directly, but rather destroy the body's own infected cells. The NK cells also assault and
lyse aberrant cells that could form tumors. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC)
either from normal individuals or from patients with either AIDS or chronic fatigue
syndrome (CFS) were treated with increased concentration of Panax ginseng extract. For
each group, increased concentrations of the herb progressively increased both the
antibody dependant cellular cytotoxicity and natural killer cell function (9). The presence
of ginseng extract significantly enhanced NK-function by PBMC from normal controls at
concentrations of greater than 10 ug/ml and cells from patients with either CFS or AIDS
at concentrations of greater than 1 ug/ml. Thus, extracts of Panax ginseng enhance
cellular immune function of PBMC both from normal individuals and patients with
depressed cellular immunity. NK cells have been demonstrated to lyse HIV infected cells
(10). If the clinical efficacy of immune stimulation in CFS and/or HIV-infected patients
were eventually demonstrated, the use of immune modulators may be an attractive
therapeutic alternative.

Even in healthy individuals, ginseng has been shown to be an immunopotentiating agent.
A controlled, double-blind study with standardized Panax ginseng extract against a
placebo found that a randomized group of 60 healthy volunteers given ginseng showed
significant increases in chemotaxis and NK activity as well as rises in phagocytosis
function (12). This group also demonstrated significant (p < 0.001) increases in total
lymphocytes (T3) and helper T4 percentages after consuming a capsule (100-mg ginseng
extract) every 12 hours for eight weeks. These data show that ginseng extracts are able to
stimulate an immune response in humans.

Isolated fractions of an immunomodulator from ginseng were used to test its tumor
inhibitory activity. Ethanol-insoluble extracts of ginseng were first demonstrated to
generate active killer T- cells through endogenously produced IL-2 (13). Peripheral blood
lymphocytes derived from humans or animals can be activated by IL-2 and become
highly cytotoxic against various malignant cells. IL-2 is a cytokine that signals other
lymphocytes to grow and proliferate. Thus, they can increase the supply of T
lymphocytes that can differentiate into cytotoxic T-cells. Because cancer cells carry
distinctive non-self molecular markers, cytotoxic T-cells can target the cancer cells and
lyse them. The injection of IL-2 can therefore mediate regression of selected metastatic
tumors in mice and humans. Yun et al. tested whether the endogenously produced IL-2
mediated the in vivo anti-tumor activity through the activation of lymphocytes (14).
Isolated IL-2 fractions that activated natural killer cells were tested in a benzo[a]pyrene
(BP) induced autochthonous lung tumor model. BP is an environmental carcinogen. The
incidence of lung tumor in the BP alone group was 55% at the ninth week after BP
treatment and it was significantly deceased by the treatment with ginseng extract. The
incidence decreased by 60% (p<0.05) in mice concurrently administered drinking water
containing 2 mg/ml ginseng extract for 6 weeks(14). The inhibition of lung tumor
incidence was dose dependent, indicating that ginseng can have specific effects that can
be augmented by increasing concentrations. Furthermore, Yang (15) found that injection

which significantly enhanced the production of interleukin-1, interleukin-3, and
interleukin-6 like substances from immune cells.
Since 1978 Yun et al. have set out to investigate if ginseng can inhibit carcinogenesis.
These researchers demonstrated that Panax ginseng extract has anticarcinogenic effects
against pulmonary tumors induced by various chemical carcinogens. Mice injected
subcutaneously with BP within 24 hours of birth and which continued to receive ginseng
extracts in drinking water showed a significant decrease in incidence of lung adenoma.
This report is consistent with the anticarcinogenic effects of Korean Red or Panax ginseng described
earlier. These researchers then began a human case-control study to further determine the
effect of ginseng consumption in cancer resistance. In a recent study of almost 2,000
patients and matched controls in the Korea Cancer Center, ginseng intake resulted in a
decreased risk for cancer (odds ratio= 0.5) (16). In addition, their results showed a
decreased risk with rising frequency of ginseng intake.


Conclusion
Ginseng has been used for nearly 2,000 years for its prophylactic and anti-tumor effects.
Also, as Panax ginseng sales and public use continue to grow nationally, it is important to
encourage efforts to study the efficacy of ginseng in humans.
The results of the above experiments and epidemiological studies confirm that Panax
ginseng has various anticarcinogenic and immunomodulatory effects. While the exact
mechanism of ginseng pharmacology remains to be solved, these studies suggest that
Panax ginseng contains ingredients that stimulated humoral and cell mediated immune
responses. Enhanced production of interferons can help to inhibit viral replication,
helping to prevent infection. Increased antibody and lymphocyte titers may be very useful
in helping cancer and AIDS patients, whose immune functions are compromised.
Stimulating NK can cytotoxic T-cell activity can lyse and help fight or prevent against
growing tumor cells. These promising results may perhaps one day offer a powerful
adjunct to immuno- and cancer therapy.

I buy most but not all of these from http://www.swansonvitamins.com except where noted.

They are cheap and most come in capsule form making it easy to open when needed (though I usually don't except in eve snack) for approx dosage changes for very small or very large dogs if you are going to follow Lucy. I am not affiliated with Swanson in any way. But most pills can be purchased anywhere. Amazon has some, or your health food store some but there it will be $$$.
Whatever you buy, be sure it DOES NOT have Xylitol or Sorbitol in it or anything with ***itol sweeteners. It is toxic to dogs. It is used a sweetener used in many liquid and chewable human products, bad for dogs. I strictly use capsules(not tablets).



Definitions that are important as to how each thing performs:

Angiogenesis - Cancer tumor's creation of blood vessel network to feed it. Anti-Angiogenesis would be to slow down or stop blood vessel creation to tumor. Here is an article on how anti-angiogenesis works to slow down cancer.

Apoptosis - Programmed cell death. This is what is normal. Cancer does not stop itself. Cancer cells grow unchecked without apoptosis.

Cell Differentation - Normal cell vs cancer cell. We don't want something in between, which parts of a tumor are. Some cells 'look' somewhere in the middle. The immune system won't be able to tell what is what. We want to make the issue black and white to the immune system. No hide and seek.

Anti-oxident - simply stuff that helps remove things we don't need or should have in the body. The oxidation process has leftovers.... Cancer and getting rid of cancer puts out alot of junk.
                          

Dosages? I just give one cap of each in her food unless specified. Lucy is 80# Lab 8 years old. If your dog is much smaller please adjust if you are going to try this.
Another problem is getting your dog to take this many pills. Please read all the stuff on diet. Remember Taste, Texture, Temperature, Smell.


This is in a nutshell:
-Change in diet to higher protein, medium fat, and much lower carbs than typical american dogs get in a prepared bag/can diet. Cancer loves carbs/glucose to grow. It can't use protein or fat very well! NO GRAINS. Either from allergy or from poor digestion of them, it creates extra inflammation and demodulates the immune system. The intestine is the largest immune organ in the body. I just add cooked ground turkey (ground beef is too high in fat) from frozen store chub, or part of a can of Whole Earth Farms canned grain free (at Petco made by Merrick and good price) ,  or 2 fried eggs broken up with spatula - added to some kibble (the kibble also hides the 'feel' of the pills, add some can veggies like green or yellow wax beans or canned chopped spinach, maybe a just little frozen blueberries, top with some warm water to increase aroma and set off 'prey' alarm in dog brain, add pills and mix some with fork. I recommend Earthborne Meadow Feast, Wellness Core, or Zignature , or Fromm Grain free, because they have a higher protein and medium fat content to begin with than most kibbles. It's at most independent pet stores, VERY well made, and reasonably priced. Try to stay away from grains, beef, chicken, white potato(if you can) due to common allergy.

-AM meal mostly* antioxidants. Why mostly these in AM? Because the Artemisinin must be given at least 6-8 hours away from lots of anti-oxidents.
-PM meal mostly* immune boosters. Cancer grows most at night.

-Evening cottage cheese/flax oil snack - some supplements and 1 Rx

-an Rx of an old med (Naltrexone) that has a great side effect and no bad ones that boosts the immune system used off label and at very very low dosages. (Low Dose Naltrexone)

-*some other natural analogues of anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, and misc. things to support or deal with symptoms or side effects

- natural analogues of things that kill cancer cells, lessens their ability to grow, or makes them easier for the immune system to get rid of.  If using the original natural whole version rather than a lab isolated synthesized version you get better results and much less side effects.

Each thing I chose has it's own properties in the mix of what it is doing:   When combined, this combination kills cancer cells, makes cancer cells either look a cancer cell or a normal cell to the immune system so the body can find and remove easier, boost the immune system, get rid of all the junk these processes put out, slow blood vessel growth to cancer cells, and manage symptoms and effects of cancer. And of course a healthier animal in general.  We can buy time. This is what we want. There is lessening or hopefully remission for as long as we can get it with a dog that is not stressed out and sick.

  

Again, I just wanted to create a very multi-modal diverse approach using as much well researched, but easily purchased stuff, that is a natural whole substance not some chemical extract in total isolation. The body is too complex too just focus on one thing. There is no magic one pill or treatment. It's 20! I hope your dog is not fussy. Your vet will likely nix your ideas. A Holistic vet won't. In fact, you will possibly need one to be able to get 2 of the herb compounds and the Low Dose Naltrexone Rx. The holistic vet probably won't want you to give all these pills I give Lucy either, they may only want a few given. I disobeyed mine. Hah! Now she is a believer every year she sees Lucy for her YEARLY checkup! Yes, yearly.

DOSAGE: I gave Lucy, a 90 pound Lab, 1 capsule 2x - 3x per day just thrown in her food every day. Her bleeding was much less, her infections and swelling therefore stopped, and the scary and messy scenes stopped. During a bleed I might double or triple this dose for a few days. This bleeding had been going on for months out of her nose. Within a week of use it was less each time and after maybe a couple of months, the bleeding was hardly ever. Her bleeding stopped, her infections and swelling therefore stopped, and the scary and messy scenes stopped. During a bleed I would double or triple this dose for a few days. This bleeding had been going on for months out of her nose. Within a week of use it was less each time and after maybe a couple of months, the bleeding was hardly ever. At this point many months after diagnosis of canine nasal adenocarcinoma cancer, she has not bled AT ALL for many months now. After she had not bled for 5 weeks straight I discontinued every day use.  Artemisinin (Wormwood Standardized Extract) 
 Artemisinin (wiki) is the second most common herbal I have read about to fight cancer in animals and it is extremely safe in almost all cases. Just don't give during radiation.

Artemisinin is an extract from the herb sweet wormwood and was originally used to treat malaria. It is currently under study by Dr. Henry Lai at the University of Washington for its effects against cancer, especially breast and bone cancer.

So how does it work?

Cancer cells take up more iron then normal cells. Artemisinin is attracted to these high iron cells and selectively goes to them. Once inside the cancer cells it reacts with the iron causing free radial formation which kills the cancer cells.
Don't give to dogs within 20 days of radiation.

ON VACCINATIONS
You might want to consider stopping all shots. I know... But if your dog has cancer and is not running around loose in the neighborhood, you should consider this. It's your call, but shots have made dogs come out of remission. It's even written in all the vets literature that comes with the vaccines to NOT give to dogs who are immune compromised.

I let the Artemisinin/Wormwood already being given should handle any heartworm prevention. I just will no longer put pesticides IN my dog either like Heartguard. Again your call, but if you consistently use the above repellents, let no standing water in yards, and use the Artemisinin/Wormwood.... it takes many months for heartworm larvae to become worms. Heartguard is a pesticide that stays in your dogs body for months. Do wild dogs die from heartworm? No. They eat right and have healthy immune systems. And that is what all this site is about.


VARIANCES

• If your dog has Mast Cell Tumors, then Tagamet or Pepcid and Benedryl OTC combo works very well to add. They both work on both types of histamine receptors - mast cells tumors release lots of histamine. Ask your vet about this.

• If your dog has Hemangiosarcoma Lucy's list is good to consider I think.
• If your dog has Osteosarcoma, same list consideration.
• If your dog has forms of blood cancers like T-Cell Lymphoma, then I might remove the Mushrooms and Beta Glucans because they could make things worse. They trigger t-cells which may not be the best thing for T-cell lymphomas. But are effective and helpful for other cancers. GENISTEIN supplements addition ( google it as canine lymphoma genistein and see what comes up!). Genistein is an isoflavone extracted from soybeans. If you google it you'll find page after page of promising research -- mostly and especially on lymphoma and t-cell lymphoma. Among other things it caused the death of those cancer cells without harming healthy ones. (Something chemo or radiation DON"T do) Swanson does carry it .  I also have Lucy on Melatonin--- Good for many cancers like hers. but NOT for lymphoma -- or at least, evidence for leukemia and lymphoma patients is not complete, but early evidence suggests it may be better for those cancers than the patient. Do not give Bone Essentials- it may be bad for elevated calcium level that may be present in some blood cancers.
• Dosages? I just give one cap of each in her food unless specified. Lucy is 80# Lab 8 years old. If your dog is much smaller please adjust if you are going to try this.

 Everything else Lucy takes other than the vet Stasis Breaker and Wei QI Booster ARE human pills but safe for dogs. Lucy would be proof...
