Dog Food and Dog Cancer Diets

Cancer loves carbs.

Anyway, how do dogs get carbs in the wild? They get a little in their meat and a little in the, well, guts of the meal. This is what they are built for. Protein and fat. Not carbs. Not grains. Not high in potatoes either. But, we need our convenience if we want to try to make their diet more natural for them and easy on us. Simple. Find high quality kibble that is the highest protein and medium fat. I use Taste of the Wild Buffalo and some of their other grain free dry dog foods. It is also a pretty good dog food for a reasonable price and is available at most independent pet stores. To rotate diet I also use Earthborn Holistic Primitive Natural. It is almost same great price and high quality. Other ones are Wellness Core, Zignature, Fromm Grain Free. So far, everything else I find is much more expensive and not much better. The above are grain free, lower in carb than most, and high protein. Lower carbohydrate recipes are often recommended by holistic veterinarians as part of a program for cancer recovery.

"Ingredients: Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), rice flour, beef, soy flour, sugar, propylene glycol, meat and bone meal, tricalcium phosphate, phosphoric acid, salt, water, animal digest, sorbic acid (a preservative), potassium chloride, dried carrots, dried peas, calcium propionate (a preservative), L-Lysine monohydrochloride, choline chloride, added color (Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 2)"This is what many grocery dog foods are like. Not Good. Look at the all grains, the corn (the first and highest percentage ingredient!! )  and flours, and dyes. This food is also 50% carbohydrate! Ug. Dogs are carnivores. (But adding some cooked veggies can help health.)

Here is Hills Science Diet example first ingredients:
Chicken Meal, Brown Rice, Cracked Pearled Barley, Whole Grain Wheat, Brewers Rice, Whole Grain Sorghum, Soybean Mill Run, Pork Fat, Soybean Meal, Flaxseed, Soybean Oil, Chicken Liver Flavor,
Dogs should not be eating all this grain esp wheat, soy, sorghum.



You need to add real cooked meat to kibble diet.
 Add a fried egg and a handful of cooked ground turkey. Eggs and those frozen 'chubs' of turkey or chicken are really cheap and will up the protein and fat in the bowl. Add a few squirts of fish, coconut, or hemp seed oil from the health food store. Omega 3 oils are healthy for dogs too! It would be in their meals in the wild. Free Range beef is very high in Omega 3. Cancer cannot use fats or protein very well to replicate. Although dogs do not digest raw vegetables very well (they can but not everything gets utilized, it does help give fiber though and carrots clean teeth), they love a few small baby carrots(but careful on the hard  stuff if your dogs palate has been breached by cancer) and it's great for their teeth. I then add a little canned green beans, or yellow wax beans, or raw spinach. I know, dogs don't eat that stuff in the wild. But it does have anti-oxidents, minerals, fiber, and other stuff that helps their immune system and digestion of nutrients.

Carbs make dogs fat. Not meat calories. CANCER LOVES CARBS. Cancer cannot utilize protein or fats very well, but it latches right on to glucose levels created by all the dry dog foods generally high carb content.
Dogs are getting fatter and are getting cancer at higher rates than ever because there is WAY too much carbs and, of course, garbage in their food (why are there dyes in their food?). But I think the carbs might be worse. Look on the back of the package of most dry dogs foods. Forget the ingredients for now, look at the protein and fat content percentages. Add those two together and subtract from 100%. That is the percentage of carbs. Don't you think 40-60% (or more from really cheap kibble) carbs is too high for a dog? Geez. No wonder the manufacturers don't put the carb content on the bags. Dogs get their energy from protein and fats, just like they were built for millenia.

This is what Lucy has been on since April 2011, 2 weeks after biopsy definite diagnosis of adenocarcinoma nasal cancer. She is still in remission with no symptoms of nasal cancer as of 1/2013. No bleeds. No discharge. No bumps. No palate problem.  No eye problem. No appetite problem. No reverse sneezing. No blocked airway of left nostril anymore(though it took 3 months of this and my other protocols and treatments though to get to this point). She used to have some symptoms. No more. Please read all posts to understand all the other stuff you need to do. Not hard. Not expensive. Not hard on the dog.

Still alive and while not in 100% remission anymore she has had some minimal symptoms for the last year.

If your dog has hemangiosarcoma, leukemia, or any type of bleeding tumor such as nasal cancer, you’ll want to know about Yunnan Baiyao (aka Yunnan Paiyao), a Chinese herb that stops bleeding. Yunnan Baiyao has been used in Asia for more than one hundred years and is considered a miracle drug for wounds and hemorrhage. It first gained recognition by western practitioners during the Vietnam War. The Vietcong carried it with them and took it if they were wounded to stop bleeding and recover more quickly.  It is now recognized as an effective remedy for reducing clotting time by as much as 55%.  Hemangiosarcoma is a very deadly cancer in dogs,  which generally isn't diagnosed until the dog collapses or dies. This sort of cancer is genetic, hereditary, and it runs in bloodlines. It causes a tumor in the heart (also seen in the spleen, and other organs) that leads to fluid build-up in the pericardium. Yunnan Baiyao has been used successfully to relieve the fluid build up and help with the dog's comfort level.

Yunnan Baiyao also known as Yunnan Paiyao has been extensively used and considered a sort of miracle drug for wounds, pain, and hemorrhage. Unlike Western pain drugs, it does not turn off pain centers in the brain, but instead facilitates circulation, bringing oxygen to the injury.
It is useful for any type of open cuts and any kind of surgery. It reduces recovery time for surgery by half because it mends injured blood vessels. It does not interfere with Western sedative drugs, so can be used the same day as surgery.
By immediately activating blood circulation, it helps resolve bleeding, pain, and swelling. It heals oozing wounds and damaged blood vessels, while expelling pus and counteracting toxins.
Although the ingredients are still secret, the two main herbs are raw and steamed tienchi ginseng. The raw form is cooling, the steamed form is warming. It is the combination of the two forms, along with other herbs, that make Yunnan Baiyao a balanced and powerful "drug" for pain and injury.

Its primary application is acute traumatic bleeding, where the powder is applied directly to the cut. The product is antibacterial as well as homeostatic.
Cuts heal quickly with even a single application, and with a butterfly bandage it can help seal smaller wounds that might otherwise require stitches. In various clinical studies, it has shown to reduce clotting time by 33% to 55%.
The powder form is more appropriate for topical application in traumatic bleeding, while the capsules are meant to be taken internally. 
Otherwise you buy capsules and it is used orally in the food.
It is used for traumatic swelling or bruising, or for other blood disorders including thrombocytopenic purpura and leukemia. It is also used to inhibit internal bleeding due to trauma, surgery or cerebral hemorrhage. 


In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it has a paradoxical effect in that it reduces bleeding, but also disperses “Congealed Blood.” The congealed blood, which may include bruising, swelling, some menstrual problems, some kinds of arthritic pain, and some pains associated with internal medicine, is a condition where clotting, stagnation, and poor circulation, are responsible for pain. Because Pseudoginseng both reduces bleeding, including internal bleeding, and breaks up Congealed Blood, it is very widely used in Chinese medicine.  This combo will help reduce infections from the bleeding.

Pseudoginseng has attracted the attention of Western researchers as a source of potential constituents helpful in heart attacks. The medicine is available from Chinese pharmacies or other suppliers under the name Yunnan Paiyao. This patent lists only Panax notoginseng as an ingredient, but also contains unspecified other proprietary substances. It may be taken internally, or sprinkled directly into a bleeding wound, followed by pressure on the wound. [Note: do not take the red pill on center top except in case of severe shock-inducing injury or bleeding I read.]. 

DOSAGE: I gave Lucy, a 90 pound Lab, 1 capsule 2x per day just thrown in her food every day. Her bleeding stopped, her infections and swelling therefore stopped, and the scary and messy scenes stopped. During a bleed I would double or triple this dose for a few days. This bleeding had been going on for months out of her nose. Within a week of use it was less each time and after maybe a couple of months, the bleeding was hardly ever. At this point many months after diagnosis of canine nasal adenocarcinoma cancer, she has not bled AT ALL for many months now. After she had not bled for 5 weeks straight I discontinued every day use. In fact, I have not used it at all since remission that occurred after about 4 months doing the stuff in this blog. This is not a blood thickener, it just helps the body clot faster when told to clot. The bleeding itself comes from the arteries feeding the tumor breaking due to the tumor increasing in size.

Many Holistic Vets tell you to use this for bleeding (or want to sell it to you for a high price....). Assuming you can even find a Holistic Vet near you. Or try looking for a herbalist in a Chinatown if you live near a large city.

Emotionally anyway, not seeing your dog bleed makes this whole 'my dog has nasal cancer' much less stressful. 

"The Hope Center has found Yunnan Baiyao to be beneficial in both our oncology and emergency patients for many reasons. Patients with excessive bleeding caused by trauma, hemorrhagic pericardial effusion, bleeding skin tumors, and hemorrhagic abdominal effusion may benefit from this Chinese herbal supplement. Patients with single or multiple internal masses are prone to bleeding or can sometimes rupture causing a large amount of blood to build up in the abdomen. The patients we expect to benefit the most from this product include: hemangiosarcoma, heart based tumors, liver tumors, mast cell tumors, any bleeding nasal tumor, and some types of melanomas. Unfortunately most tumors have the potential to bleed either due to their type and/or location. We have been using both the oral and topical form of the Yunnan Baiyao.

The red pills in center of packet are used for acute bleeding or discovery of acute bleeding. We have recently started using the red pill on the day of surgery, such as stable splenectomies. If the red pill is used in acute emergencies, we will start the regular capsules 2-6 hours later. We dose our pets as follows: Cats and dogs <10 lbs 1EOD, dogs 11-20 lbs 1 every 24 hours, 21-89 lbs 1 every 12 hours, >90 lbs 2 every 12 hours.

I was first given this stuff for my dog from my Holistic Vet. She has liver disease and her tumor ruptured and she was bleeding internally. I thought she was a goner, she was extremely sick and dying. She was immediately better and with each day became stronger & stronger. It stops internal & external bleeding. She is almost 16 and still with me today. I attribute it to this fantastic formula. Apparently formulated in 1902 and in China it is highly regarded, it is like their penicillin. I read it was used in the Vietnam war and saved many lives. Great product to keep on hand for emergencies!

I found Yunnan Baiyao to be excellent for the care of a dog with adeno carcinoma. I used Yunnan on the advice of a veterinarian, to control nasal bleeding, which it did very well, and I also think that use of the product prolonged the dog's life in that the cancer seemed to progress more slowly than anticipated.

I am surprised to see so many reviews for Yunnan Paiyao written by people who have used this wonderful medicine for their dogs. Yunnan Paiyao (AKA Yunnan Paiyao, Yunnan white powder) was created for human wounds, injuries, excess bleeding, excessive menstrual flow, surgery, insect bites. The Chinese People's Army and others use it for gunshot wounds, deep incisions, and bruises, swelling and pain resulting from physical trauma and surgery. I advise surgery and dental patients to swallow the small red ball just before a procedure. The hemostatic, astringent herbs will not interfere with sedative drugs used in surgery. Yunnan Paiyao can be taken for up to several weeks after surgery and wounds to speed healing. The results are amazing. It contains several forms of tienchi ginseng (hemostatic, heart tonic, anticholesterol) an herbal popularly called "dragon's blood" used for reducing bruises, myrrh and a few other astringent herbs.

Like other reviewers, we have a dog with nasal cancer (adenocarcinoma) who had nose bleeds. We gave him Yunnan Balyao on a holistic vet's recommendation and have seen the bleeding reduced first to a trickle, then to only occasional (once or twice a day) spotting. I have not yet had the need to use the product but have it on hand because I own golden retrievers who are very prone to hemangiosarcoma. After hearing about and seeing it's miraculous powers I wanted to make sure I have it in case one of my dogs ever needs it. I've seen dogs on death's door recover and live many more months with good quality of life because of this product. Every golden retriever owner should have this product.

I am using yunnan baiyao in conjunction with piroxicam to treat my dog's bladder cancer. We started him on the supplement about a month ago (after determining chemotherapy was not working) and I am very impressed with how well my dog is doing. I initially did not expect an herbal supplement to help much, but a few days after starting him on the pills there was little to no blood in his urine and he was straining less to pee. Will it cure him? No. But it seems to have increased his quality of life which makes me super happy.

My dog has nose cancer and "drips" quite a bit of blood. This product has really lessened that amount. It's not as red or as much. The oncology clinic where I took my dog for radiation told me a few patients have used it. I highly recommend it.

I had a bad laceration on the bottom of my foot, I broke open one of the capsules and rubbed the powder over my cleaned wound before bed. I went to bed that night around 6 pm and got up around 7 am the next day and the wound was nearly completely healed over.

This is not just a product for dogs! U.S. soldiers in Vietnam carried Yunnan Baiyao with them to treat bullet wounds. It is a great item to keep in your first aid kit. (I am a licensed acupuncturist and am presently getting certified in Chinese herbalism as well.) It is best to consult with someone who knows how to use this in emergencies, so I'm glad to see people are consulting with their alternative medicine veterinarians. People can use this, too, so go to a licensed herbalist who practices Chinese medicine if you want to use this for a human being. Great stuff, with proven efficacy.

My 15 year old Weimaraner developed spleen and bladder cancer last November, 11 months ago. Spleen tumor bleeding stopped by using Yunnan Baiyao. Also gave Lactoferrin (safe source of iron for dogs with cancer, regular iron will feed cancer, lactoferrin plugs iron receptacles of tumor), Gippofain from Russia (from bark of sea buckthorn tree) to attack cancer, and cordyceps (to cripple cancer cell growth/splitting). Spleen cancer almost gone (from 80+% invasion to barely detectable) and bladder cancer essentially gone. Yunnan baiyao shared with vets for surgery with excellent results to stop bleeding. Shared with bird owners and used to stop bleeding. Great product!!!

Low Dose Naltrexone and Cancer and MS

Very Low Dose Naltrexone. -

Information on the use of Low Dose Naltrexone in the treatment of dogs, cats, horses and other pets. Known by the acronym LDN, this is a "low dose" form of therapy utilizing the FDA approved drug Naltrexone for the "off label" treatment of immune related disorders. The mechanism of action appears to involve an immune modulating or balancing effect of various components of the immune system mediated through an effect on Endorphin levels.

Naltrexone was approved by the FDA in 1984. It is legally available to be prescribed by physicians and veterinarians for any purpose. When given to humans in low doses, Naltrexone increases the body's production of endorphins. Endorphins are hormones, produced by the body, which help maintain and regulate the immune system. There is a growing body of information reporting the effectiveness of LDN in the treatment of a wide range of immune related and auto-immune disorders. It has been in use in this manner for over 20 years.

In developing Naltrexone for full dose use toxicity testing in rats, rabbits, dogs and monkeys determined that at therapeutic levels Naltrexone was non-toxic and had very few side effects. However obtaining FDA approval for the Low Dose regimen will require funding that due to the present out of patent or generic status of the drug will be difficult to obtain from any pharmaceutical company. Some privately funded pilot studies have been conducted and show much promise. More extensive studies are needed and funding continues to be sought by advocates of LDN.

Occasionally, during the first week's use of LDN, patients may have some difficulty sleeping. This rarely persists after the first week. Should it do so, dosage can be temporarily reduced

You will have to print these articles on Low Dose Naltrexone treatments and do Google research yourself to be able to convince your vet to write a prescription for this. They will not have heard of it and if they look it up just by drug name, they will be confused why you are wanting to give a old med used for treatment of drug addicts to a dog with cancer. The focus needs to be on "Low Dose Naltrexone for the treatment of Cancer" and such. This will be a tuff sell but if you can show them the research and talk smartly about this with conviction, you should be able to get them to write a prescription for 50mg pills that you that you can pick up at your drugstore. Just crush the 50mg pill using a pill crusher and put in 50ml of distilled water and shake before every use. Just give 2 or 3 ml at bed daily using a baby medicine dropper in a small snack. Did you know that vets by law (and dentists actually) can write a prescription for anything that may help a patient!  Geez, the dog has cancer, what can it hurt to give a very LOW dose of something to try.

 Lucy gets 2ml to 3ml (this is the most common dose no matter weight unless very small dog - human normal dosages start at 50mg/ml so this is, well, low dosing. This is all that is needed to boost immune system) of LDN Low Dose Naltrexone prescription from measured baby medicine dropper (shake bottle first) into the above nightly PM snack that I self compounded from 50mg standard Naltrexone tablets ground into 50ml of distilled water (hey cool - it turns 50mg into 50ml for easy dosing) with a few drops of colloidal silver as preservative and refrigerate. Pharmacy area will have bottles and droppers and pill grinder.                          
            

*Occasionally, during the first week's use of LDN, patients may have some difficulty sleeping. This rarely persists after the first week. Should it do so, dosage can be temporarily reduced.

The next effective treatment I researched and am using on Lucy is Artemisinin (Arte) which is an extract from the wormwood plant.  Artemisinin is used successfully to treat malaria throughout the world.  

Cancer cells have the highest concentration of iron in their cells because they need that iron to stimulate growth, get a good blood supply going and eventually kill the host!  Arte attacks cells with the highest concentration of iron much like the malaria parasite which also contains a lot of iron.

An article appearing in Life Sciences in 2001 by Drs. Singh and Lai at the University of Washington detailed the rapid and complete destruction of a radiation-resistant breast cancer cell line in vitro.  The destruction occurred within 8 hours and had little effect on normal cells. 

Artemisinin has two semi-synthetic derivatives: Artesunate and Artemether.  A paper published in Oncology in 2001 described the cytotoxic effects of Artesunate against a wide variety of cancers including melanomas, breast, ovarian, leukemia and colon cancers. The growth of all of these cancers was inhibited by 50%. 


DOSAGE: I give Lucy my 90 pound Lab with nasal cancer 200mg of Artemisinin Standardized Extract of Wormwood (the whole herb version makes her not want to eat it) 2-3 hours after dinner with her Budwig Diet Cottage Cheese and Flax Oil snack. It MUST be only given away from iron containing foods which would be your normal dog food and and at least 6-8 hours from anti-oxidents. So I put as much anti-oxidents in her morning meal as I can and most immune booster supplements in her PM meal. I buy from Swanson Vitamin the Artemisinin Standardized Extract of Wormwood (the whole herb version makes her not want to eat it) . She is still doing well many months post dx of canine adenocarcinoma nasal cancer.

Budwig Diet Plan for Dog Nasal Cancer or any cancer really

The Budwig Diet Plan and Cancer  

This protocol was created by Dr. Johanna Budwig, a bio-chemist, Nobel prize nominee and health practitioner who worked with patients in Germany between 1952 and 2002. During that time, people from all over the world who were suffering from various kinds of cancer, many of them terminal, met with this brilliant woman. She started them on her diet and general protocol and within three or four months, most regained their health.


Doctors who told cancer patients they had to have chemo, radiation or surgery, or told them nothing more could be done for them, giving them only weeks to live, retested them and declared them cancer-free, wrote Dr. Budwig. She claimed her success rate with cancer patients was over 90%.


Cancer epidemiologist John D. Potter of Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center said, "We're discovering a plethora of bioactive substances in plant foods."..."These compounds seem to interact with every step in the cancer process, mostly slowing, stopping, or reversing them..." Yes, he said that the substances in plant foods can stop or reverse cancer.
One of the keys in the Budwig diet is consuming foods that offer nutrients that help cells absorb oxygen. Dr. Otto Warburg received the Nobel Prize in 1931 for discovering that when cells can no longer absorb oxygen, cancer can develop. Dr. Budwig built on that knowledge and was the first to develop a diet and protocol that restores cells to normal functioning.
At the heart of the Budwig diet is organic, cold pressed, liquid flax seed oil blended with cottage cheese or “quark.” Dr. Budwig discovered that when these two foods are blended together, the sulfurated protein components in the cheese, such as cysteine, bond with the oil, making it more water soluble and easier to digest and metabolize. Consequently, more of the essential fatty acids and electrons in the highly unsaturated flax seed oil reach the cells and have a healing effect on the cell membrane where carcinogens attach themselves. The membrane of each cell is made up of lipids. Flax seed oil can improve this important outer cell lining that is crucial to cell function and division.


Her plan eliminates damaging fats and foods from the diet and replaces them with healing foods and life-saving essential fatty acids. Along with diet, she emphasized the benefits of sunlight and stress reduction. Dr. Budwig had over a 90% success rate with this protocol with all kinds of cancer patients over a 50 year period.  She worked with humans but she herself recommended using the flax oil and cottage cheese for dogs with cancer.  Obviously, her overall diet plan of fresh fruits and veggies is intended for her human patients—our pets can stick with carb free, grain free diets, foods as close to organic as possible and the FLAX OIL/cottage cheese mix once a day.


A main component of the Budwig Protocol is flaxseed oil Dr. Budwig discovered that FLAX OIL supplies the omega-3 and omega-6 oils that are deficient in cancer patients so the cell membrane can aid normal cell replication and attract oxygen to the cell. EFAs are also converted by the body into prostaglandins which regulate kidney function, inflammation response, immune function, keep blood vessels elastic, regulate blood pressure, influence platelet stickiness and properly metabolize cholesterol. A dog’s body can only absorb a limited amount of oil so the instructions below are important for binding the oil to a sulfur protein to allow the resulting water-soluble oil to be absorbed in greater quantities.


Omega 3 fatty acids, soften the cell membranes allowing penetration of supplements and oxygen, making the inner cell less hospitable to cancer. The Budwig protocol should be used in conjunction with Artemisinin, Artemix, Avemar, Oleander, low dose naltrexone, or anything else you are using.  It enhances what you are doing by softening the outer cell membranes to allow penetration of the herbal chemotherapy. 


Purchase organic flax oil—Barleans is a good brand. Get this fresh from the natural foods section of your grocer or health food store. 


There's one really important thing to do with the FLAX OIL to make sure it's maximally absorbable by the body. You need to blend it really well with a high protein dairy product like low fat cottage cheese with pineapple so the oil becomes water soluble. I use a hand held, immersible blender and blend until it looks like cheese cake or cheese with no signs of oil rising to the top, sort of like a smoothie.  But I sometimes just use a fork to mix for a good long time, due to my laziness. And it seems to be working.


The ratio of FLAX OIL to cottage cheese is 1:2 (1 tablespoon of flax oil to 2 tablespoons of cottage cheese). For a large dog (100 pounds) with cancer, your goal is 6 tablespoons of FLAX OIL per day but you should work up to it to avoid causing diarrhea. Start with 3 tablespoons of FLAX OIL per day for a couple weeks then go to 4T for a week, then 5T for a week, then 6T.  For a 50 pound dog, cut the dose in half and for little dogs, cut that in half again.  For prevention, 1 tablespoon of FLAX OIL per 100 pounds should be helpful.

 Tell your vet you are doing this amount of fat, to keep a watch on too much weight gain plus be sure to add this amount of fat over time like it says above so your dogs pancreas doesn't get mad trying to digest these increased fats.  Lucy never got fat.


Cancer loves an acidic environment because it cannot survive in an alkaline environment. Sugar causes acidity, plus it feeds cancer so avoid all sugars.  A grain free diet is best.  Use a high protein diet of cooked foods like eggs and ground turkey and good dog food kibble. Throw some veggies and blueberries so help fill them up and give them more nutrition. Because the protein and fats are going up with anti cancer diets you need to feed kibble in a lower amount and raise the veggies to they don't beg for more for their tummy. Dogs are made for pure protein and medium fat. So people stop with the myths of too high protein. Just make sure they have plenty of fresh water. A discussion of these myths will be blogged later. 
*Unless your dog has diagnosed kidney issues by your vet, feed them what they were built for.  


You can give the Budwig mix as a treat—Lucy is getting this once a day for a snack. She loves it! All I know is I have been doing this for many months now past her biopsy and x-ray proven diagnosis and her symptoms are gone. I am doing other natural stuff like I talk about in this blog, so obviously this is not a perfect study example, but she gets no radiation or chemo and has now lived many months past normally given AND now without symptoms even.


A few vets claim it is not possible for dogs to convert flax seed oil into omega 3 while others make no such claim. They all state, however, that the jury is still out on the dog’s ability to utilize flax seed oil. But Budwig proved it can be absorbed and that it can help. YOU CAN SEE EVERYWHERE THAT THIS STUFF IS GOOD FOR DOGS BECAUSE DOG FOOD MAKERS ARE NOW PUTTING IT IN ALL THE BETTER DOG FOODS AND SUPPLEMENTS FOR DOGS.

Hypothetically, a morally defunct pet food company may legitimately utilize a three week old, tumor laden, animal carcass found rotting in a pool of pesticides, turn it into a bag of fat sprayed, crunchy, dry profit, and market the food as natural, premium, or gourmet. The Dog food industry is primarly self-regulating. AAFCO provides guidence, but the list of allowable food materials is shocking. The following is a example of some of the ingrediants AAFCO permints for use in pet foods:

• Polyethylene roughage replacement (plastic)
• Hydrolyzed poultry feathers
• Hydrolyzed hair
• Hydrolyzed leather meal
• Poultry hatchery by-product
• Meat meal tankage
• Peanut hulls
• Ground almond shells

Don't feed your dog junk like Alpo, Beneful, or Hills. Don't let the vets sell you the pricey Hills. It's junk. They make so much money on those foods and they are just not that well made. Sure better than Ol' Roy but c'mon people in charge of our pets health! Read the labels. You do for your own food! Actually, what I am thinking. As long as you don't buy the cheapest junk at the grocery store (PLEASE don't buy dog food there, goto your local pet store and talk with the help), all the labels look good. What to do? Use Grain Free with highest protein level you can find. Even the highest protein ones are not that high though. The carb levels (still created because grain free doesn't mean carb free) are still high due to potatoes being used, sweet potato is better but still kinda high carb FOR A CARNIVORE.

I am still and so should you, research raw dog foods and cancer in dogs.
Sure, raw sounds good and right for our dogs, but in practice can be time consuming, gross, and well, unless you, um, kill and disassemble this 'prey' yourselves, the bacteria count from factory farm and s-houses is VERY high. I have read more than once that 20% to up to 50% of ground turkey is teaming with Salmonella. Certainly not good for immune compromised dogs with cancer. I just pan fry ground turkey or ground chicken from a frozen chub thawed (this stuff is cheap) with some garlic and give a part of a cup on my dogs dry food. Or a cooked egg on top.
