Not just Holistic, but how to use E: All of the Above!

I made this blog because I did tons of research on success stories and research worldwide and used it on my dog with nasal cancer named Lucy. So, now my hobby is molecular biology. The treatment uses combination of health store supplements, some prescription meds, diet changes, and specific Ayurvedic and Chinese medicinal herbs. I just wanted her to have a better quality of life. I thought this combination of E: All the Above (except no radiation or chemo and surgery for this cancer was not an option) would help that for sure, but it actually put her bleeding nasal cancer in remission!
My approach to cancer is about treating the whole animals biologic system. But I do hate the word 'Holistic'. Sounds like hoo hoo. This is science based, research based data and results of using active herbal compounds that happen to be readily available and common. Some call it Nutriceuticals. Others may call it Orthomolecular cancer therapy. Or Cancer Immunotherapy.
I FEEL DIVERSITY IN TREATMENT IS KEY:
-Slow cancer cell reproduction
-Make cancer cells become easier targets for the immune system
-Kill the cancer cells
-Rid the cancer cells
-Remove the toxins it produces
- Stimulate and Modulate the immune system
-Control secondary symptoms like bleeding, infection, inflammation, mucous, appetite, or pain for a better feeling animal
-Working with your vet for exams and prescriptions that are sometimes needed when conditions are acute.
Just by using a multi-modal treatment approach that is as diverse in attack as possible. Both conventional and natural.
The body conditions that allowed it to develop in the first place must be corrected. If caught early enough, like with Lucy, this ongoing maintenance correctional treatment is all that was required at this point to achieve, so far, more than 10 TIMES the life expectancy given (more than 60 months) after diagnosis WITH remission. I did not use radiation or chemotherapy or surgery.
I hope this cancer research can help your dog as well.

My Lucy

My Lucy
In Loving Memory my Lucy December 2016
CURRENT STATUS - It was for more than 5 YEARS after Lucy was diagnosed by biopsy in March 2011 with nasal cancer that she lived. And she was in remission for 4 of 5 years using no radiation or chemo! Now multiply that by 7 to be 35 years extended!! She was 12.5 years old - equivalent to almost 90 human years old. She ended her watch December 1, 2016. I miss her so much.

DOXICYCLENE STOPS CANCER ANGIOGENESIS

DOXICYCLENE
One of the cheapest, safest, and most easily obtained Rx through a vet? Doxycycline.  Now, doxycycline is not that great of an antibiotic.  It actually has fairly limited use as an antibiotic.  Some use it for dental infections, but it is most commonly used to treat certain blood parasites. It's an older antibiotic with new novel uses.

Some exciting news about doxy?  It has anticancer effects!
Doxycyline helps suppress angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation that feeds tumors and robs the body). In this way it slows tumor growth. It blocks enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMP’s) that digest the tissue around tumors, allowing new blood vessels to be formed. Check it out here.
Not having access to as much blood supply, the cancer cells are less able to metastasize through the circulation.  This lessens the spread of some cancershttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12486404
In the lab, this drug can induce apoptosis (normal, healthy, programmed death) of cancer cells.  This is a direct action on the cancer cells, and may have some usefulness in cancers.

Pretty cool.  I know this is not holistic or natural, but this is low side effect profile. And cheap if you get the vet to write you a prescription that you can take to your regular pharmacy. The vets make a huge markup on Rx and you will need this long term.

Long term use alternating this every other day with Meloxicam(Metacam) an NSAID (1 day Doxy next day Meloxi) is basically the NAVY protocol or Metronomic protocol and has shown good results at keeping things reasonable for a while. Try to reserve Prednisone for worst times.

Commonly Used Herbs in Dogs With Cancer and Their Possible Benefits

Alfalfa
- antioxidant with cancer preventing properties

Aloe Vera - helps fight infections, antioxidant, boosts bone marrow

Artemsisin - see wormwood and article in blog  I USE THIS

Astragalus - boosts immune system, anti-inflammatory properties

Burdock Root - removes toxins from body, blood cleanser, stimulates bone marrow, antioxidant

Cat's Claw - shrinks tumors, immune stimulating properties, anti-inflammatory properties I USE THIS

Charparral - a desert plant used to treat tumors

Dandelion - provides nutrients, supports liver function

Echinacea - immune boosting properties, raise white blood cell counts, stimulates lymphatic system

Essiac - an herbal formula containing several herbs, useful in fighting certain cancers. I USE THIS

Flax - cancer fighting chemicals, antioxidant, and antiangiogenesis properties I USE THIS FLAX OIL MIXED WITH COTTAGE CHEESE AS IN BUDWIG DIET

Garlic- antioxidant properties, stimulates white blood cells in bone marrow, inhibits growth of cancer

Ginseng - antioxidant properties, protects against cancer formation, Red ginseng stimulates natural killer cell function,
inhibit tumor invasion, and has antiangiogenesis properties. I USE RED GINSENG AND YU NAN BAI YAO

Goldenseal - potent anti cancer properties, anti-inflammatory, beneficial for digestive tract

Hawthorn - antioxidant properties, useful for cardiac side effects from some chemotherapy drugs (doxorubicin)

Hoxsey - an herbal formula containing several herbs, may be useful in fighting certain cancers

Licorice Root -  anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, stimulates immune system by enhancing interferon and
T cell production.  "Natures cortisone".  I USE THIS

Marshmallow - antibacterial and immune-stimulating properties

Milk Thistle - protects liver, reduces toxicity from chemotherapy  I USE THIS

Mistletoe -  extract Iscador is a cancer therapy, stimulates immune system, encourages cell death (apoptosis),  and
possesses anti-tumor and anti-metastatic properties.

Oregon Grape - alternative to goldenseal, stimulates white blood production from the bone marrow, anti-cancer
properties, supports liver function  I USE THIS

Red Clover - contains nutrients, blood cleanser, can be applied directly to skin cancers

Saw Palmetto - said to help with prostate cancer in dogs

Turmeric - inhibits the growth of cancer, induces cancer cell death, antioxidant, and stimulates immune system

Wormwood -  (active compound is artemisinin) controls infections, selective killing of cancer cells when
administered with supplemental iron. I USE THIS

Yellow Dock - cleansing herb that stimulates liver function, high iron content
Laboratory studies are expanding the clinical knowledge that is already documented in traditional texts. The herbs that are traditionally used for anti-cancer treatment and that are anti-angiogenic through multiple interdependent processes (including effects on gene expression, signal processing, and enzyme activities) include Artemisia annua (Chinese wormwood), Viscum album (European mistletoe), Curcuma longa (curcumin), Scutellaria baicalensis (Chinese skullcap), resveratrol and proanthocyanidin (grape seed extract), Magnolia officinalis (Chinese magnolia tree), Camellia sinensis (green tea), Ginkgo biloba, quercetin, Poria cocos, Zingiber officinalis (ginger), Panax ginseng, Rabdosia rubescens hora (Rabdosia), and Chinese destagnation herbs. Natural health products target molecular pathways other than angiogenesis, including epidermal growth factor receptor, the HER2/neu gene, the cyclo-oxygenase-2 enzyme, the nuclear factor kappa-B transcription factor, the protein kinases, the Bcl-2 protein, and coagulation pathways.
Here is an updated blog page on the herbs I AM USING AND HAVING RESULTS WITH and the dosages for my 90 pound lab.

Why isn’t AAFCO approved status alone enough to trust?

Why isn’t Association of Feed Control Officials AAFCO approved dog food status alone enough to trust for our dog foods?

"In a perfect world, AAFCO approved status on our dog foods guarantees a product meets your animal companion’s minimum nutrient needs. In reality, AAFCO claims fall into the honor system. No approval process exists to test acceptability of ingredients or to check the accuracy of nutrient claims. Furthermore, no enforcement body exists to punish companies knowingly using moldy or diseased products or misleading consumers with nutrient claims. Hypothetically, a morally defunct pet food company may legitimately utilize a three week old, tumor laden, animal carcass found rotting in a pool of pesticides, turn it into a bag of fat sprayed, crunchy, dry profit, and market the food as natural, premium, or gourmet. "

Bleh.

Items that pass Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) guidelines for dog food

AAFCO Approval
The Dog food industry is primarly self-regulating. AAFCO provides guidence, but the list of allowable food materials is shocking. The following is a example of some of the ingrediants AAFCO permints for use in pet foods:
• Dehydrated garbage
• Undried processed animal waste products
• Polyethylene roughage replacement (plastic)
• Hydrolyzed poultry feathers
• Hydrolyzed hair
• Hydrolyzed leather meal
• Poultry hatchery by-product
• Meat meal tankage
• Peanut hulls
• Ground almond shells

more bleh.

Don't feed your dog junk like Alpo, Beneful, or Hills. Don't let the vets sell you the pricey Hills. It's junk. They make so much money on those foods and they are just not that well made. Sure better than Ol' Roy but c'mon people in charge of our pets health! Read the labels. You do for your own food! Actually, what I am thinking. As long as you don't buy the cheapest junk at the grocery store (PLEASE don't buy dog food there, goto your local pet store and talk with the help), all the labels look good. What to do? Use Grain Free with highest protein level you can find. Even the highest protein ones are not that high though. The carb levels (still created because grain free doesn't mean carb free) are still high due to potatoes being used, sweet potato is better but still kinda high carb FOR A CARNIVORE.

“The prevalence of cancer and autoimmune related diseases in our pets is directly correlated to the processed foods we are feeding them. We are literally starving them to death of nutrients while stuffing them to the point of obesity with garbage.”
- Dr. Denise Miller, DVM and author of What's Wrong With our Pets?

"In my practice, the Stella & Chewy’s brand raw diet fills a special niche. Unfortunately, cancer in our pet companions is far too prevalent. I am often asked to recommend a meat-based diet that is safe for an immune-suppressed patient. Pets receiving chemotherapy or steroid treatment for allergies can utilize Stella & Chewy’s Certified Pathogen Safe food. I have appreciated the availability of the unique Duck Duck Goose formula for “cooling” my patients with hot constitutions or inflammatory disorders."
- Dr. Jodie Gruenstern, DVM, Animal Doctor

Here is their example mentioned above. I know, lots of money...
Stella & Chewy's Freeze Dried Raw Dog Food for Adult Dogs, Chicken Patties, 32 Count, 16 Ounce Bag

I am still and so should you, research raw dog foods and cancer in dogs.
Sure, raw sounds good and right for our dogs, but in practice can be time consuming, gross, and well, unless you, um, kill and disassemble this 'prey' yourselves, the bacteria count from factory farm and s-houses is VERY high. I have read more than once that 20% to up to 50% of ground turkey is teaming with Salmonella. Certainly not good for immune compromised dogs with cancer. I just pan fry ground turkey or ground chicken from a frozen chub thawed (this stuff is cheap) with some garlic and give a part of a cup on my dogs dry food. Or a cooked egg on top.
 Let me know and comment.
